Edvard Hagerup Grieg: Music Analysis
After listening to this pieces, I decided it was composed in the Baroque period of music. When I listened, it sounded as if there were two separate pieces but the radio personality did not announce a new piece or a change. For this reason, I assumed they were movements. The first movement sounded dark and frantic. It reminded me of sitting down to take a test and being filled up with anxiety. The mood of the piece changed and became lighter. It was not necessarily happy but rather soothing and romantic. However, there was a bass instrument in the background that seems to foreshadow something. This part of the of the piece reminded me of Cinderella at the ballroom dancing with Prince Charming. It was smooth and flowy and the bass in the back making a constant “thump thump” is similar to the clock ticking, warning Cinderella that the transformation will disappear at midnight. The piece returns to the dark mood from the beginning, but this time it’s slower, making the listener seem not only anxious but sad as well. If the previous part was Cinderella dancing, then …show more content…
He was born on June June 15, 1843, into a wealthy merchant family. Because he was not the heir to his family’s business, his parents allowed him to study music. Grieg preferred to be independent when he played music and he improvised and created his own melodies rather than playing the compulsory etudes. When Ole Bull, a famous violin virtuoso, visited Grieg’s family in the summer of 1858, Grieg’s talent was discovered and he went off to the music conservatory in Leipzig, Germany. On August 18, 1861, Grieg gave his first concert in Karlshamn, Sweden. He married his cousin Nina Hagerup on June 11, 1867. Nina gave birth to their daughter, Alexandra, on April 10, 1868. He has composed many famous pieces such as Piano Concerto in a minor, Lyric Pieces for piano, and Last Spring. Grieg passed away on September 4,

The first piece was Intègrales by Edgard Varèse (1883-1965). Edgard Victor Achille Charles Varèse was a French-born composer who spent the greater part of his career in the United States. He was innovator in 20th-century techniques of sound production. According to the www.allmusic.com, his concept of "organized sound" led to many experiments in form and texture. He was constantly on the lookout for new sound sources, and was one of the first to extensively explore percussion, electronics, and taped sounds. Intègrales was composed in 1925. I think this piece is very modern, and is a work for wind, brass, and percussion. I am not really enjoying this piece because it is a little noisy for me. The second piece is Coptic Light, and the composer…

Piece 5 begins by giving a very somber tone that drew from me a bucket of melancholia that echoed deeply into my ears with each down stroke as the melody is poured out slowly into my soul. Suddenly, there is hope a rising sound crashes into me like a wave as each feathering high note begins to call out to me but still with a touch of profound sadness. The crashing of a drum then begins and it thunders into me a purpose, creating a drive as the intensity of it begins to increase along with the tempo, only to die back down into its familiar melody. Listening to this piece is like being hit by a hurricane.…

The first movement in this piece opened with a solo piano. The pianist played chords in a key which I am unfamiliar and then came to rest on a dominant chord. There was a pause for what seemed to be two or three beats and then the orchestra entered in what I made out to be B major. A theme is played by the orchestra in the continuing B major and then drops in pitch to another key, which I was unable to make out which one. Once again the theme is played, followed by a strong cadence. The music seems to fade into one bar. After some kind of accompaniment, the music changes to minor, and sounds pianissimo. There is a rise in the bass and more harmonies. There is a rise in the bass and more harmonies. A final cadence is heard, and then the beginning bars are heard again for closing.…
