Edward Butt Research Paper
Howard Edward Butt Sr. was born in Memphis, Tennessee on April 9, 1895. Howard was the youngest of three sons born to Charles Butt, and Florence Thornton Butt. The family moved to Kerrville, Texas due to his father's tuberculosis and in 1905, his mother opened a small grocery store below their apartment, called Mrs. C.C Butt’s Staple and Fancy Howard managed the store while in high school. Howard graduated valedictorian of Tivy High School in 1914, after graduation he moved to California where he harvested grapes. After service in the navy during World War I, Howard returned to Texas in 1919 to once again manage the family store, and although some of the early stores failed, his stores survived the Great Depression and grew by offering low-priced goods. In 1935, Butt renamed the name of the company to H.E. Butt Grocery but later in ‘52 shortened it to H-E-B. Howard remained chairman until his death in 1991 where his second son, Charles Butt took the leadership role. …show more content…
