It was the night of Christmas Eve, the man was making a sculpture of ice. While making the sculpture a woman appeared dancing in the ice shavings falling from the sky. The woman held her hand out appreciating his work and him. He then climbs off of the ladder to see his work but when he accepted how well it was, he accidentally cut Kim. Edward now feeling bad tries to see if Kim is ok but Kim’s ex-boyfriend Jim intervenes telling Edward to leave because he’s a freak and that he was not welcomed. The director Tim Burton then shows Edward from Edward scissorhands cutting his clothes with his hands made of scissors to show a transition in the character to show that he has finally accepted that he will never be normal and that he will never be…
To begin, Burton uses lighting to create an eerie and suspenseful mood. One way that Burton does this is through low key and side lighting, for example, in Edward Scissorhands when Edward is walking through the front door towards the police, there is light coming from the side that appears on one side of his face, which gets the audience to think “what will happen next.” later, when the audience sees Edward save Kevin from being hit by Jim’s van there is low key lighting, which causes the townspeople to believe that instead of Edward saving Kevin, they believe that he is trying to kill him. This example of low key lighting is helping to create a suspenseful mood, seeing as though…
When Edward is coming home and sees the van driving crazy, he thinks of Kevin, who is walking home from a friends’ house. Walking home seems trustworthy enough. The menacing, non-diegetic music in the back foreshadows the abnormal events that are about to happen. When the audience sees the van speeding up and heading towards Kevin, they realize he is in danger, which is foreshadowed by the ominous music. Burton paints suspense in his films and keeps the audience of the edge of their seats, wondering what will happen, and keeping the dramatic events going by using sound and…
Burton uses contrasting colors in Edward Scissorhands in order to show how dissimilar Edward is. In Edward Scissorhands, all the houses, cars, and people’s clothing in the neighborhood are bright pastel colors that juxtaposed Edward’s black and white appearance already displaying how Edward does not fit in with the neighborhood.…
Sound is a crucial part in a Tim Burton movie he uses sound in so many different ways for example in “Edward scissorhands” Edward in carving an ice sculpture and all the ice shavings flying off looks like snow and there has never been snow in there town so Kim is amazed by the beauty. Tim Burton uses music to create a mood of a fairytale. On the other hand in “Edward scissorhands” Peg drives up to Edward house and the music creates a very spooky sense of suspense. In “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” Tim uses sound to portray a fantasy like feeling throughout the whole movie even when something bad went wrong he still used a…
Symbolism is used to provide a deeper meaning to things; it leaves the audience thinking about a more profound message than what is seen on screen, or written on paper. Anything from objects to weather to characters can be used to represent something else, something that the author thinks is important to share. Imperfection is a common theme in Edward Scissorhands and The Night Wanderer, both works similarly try to convey the message that everyone has their own flaws. Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands and Drew Hayden-Taylor’s The Night Wanderer both use symbolism to display flaws in characters, and the audience grasps onto the idea that perfection isn’t everything.…
For example, background music can play a sad tone during a dramatic event to increase the effectiveness on the mood that’s meant to be set. An upbeat sound can get us energized for a happier event. Daisies utilizes lots of sounds to play on our senses in different forms in not just diegetic ways, but also non diegetic. In a lot of cases daisies has odd soundings taking place during scenes like a typewriter sound, when there is clearly no type writer anywhere near them, or the most obvious example the robotic sounds made during the inciting incident. However, the odd sounds listed aren’t the only occurrence of non-diegetic sound. On several occasions dramatic melodies are played to increase the mood like when the butterfly suitor is calling and trying to get Marie, and there is no obvious implication that there would logically have that music played in the scene. Diegetic music is heard most notably when they are at 1920’s style night club. You hear music playing, and see the band. You are also queued into the dancers that enter and put on a show. All these factors clue you in to knowing the sound that is playing is in the actual scene, and not simply heard for commentary by…
The main credit for Edward Scissorhands gives the introduction a mysterious feel played by instruments such as violins and strings and bells. Throughout the main credit there sounds like a choir where they say “ooh”, that gives it a spooky feeling with the darkness and machinery. After the main credit, when the snow is falling the music tone lowers down and gives the scene a much calmer tone. The violin goes along with the winter night and the snowflakes falling down.…
Edward scissorhand is a movie made in 1990 directed by Tim Burton. This story is about a man called Edward that gets created by an inventor with a few incomplete parts to make him look quite different than others. Being different and unique he finds it very hand and struggles endlessly to try and fit into the society he is brought into. He is challenged to adapt into the new life and environment that he has never experienced before. When Edward, an outsider enters into the community there is confusion and conflicts about who he is and what he is doing here.…
In this essay I will be talking about different types of sound and lighting among these three movies. How they differentiate and how they are similar. The first cinematic technique I studied while watching these movies was sound. Non-diegetic sound is when the characters cannot hear the music or sound, it is used for foreshadowing, it can add suspense, happiness or cheerfulness. Diegetic sound is when the characters can obviously hear the music or sound. In The Corpse Bride Tim Burton uses non-diegetic sound a lot like when Victor is in the woods practicing his vows there is quiet, slow music. When Emily comes back from the dead Victor runs and in the back there is loud fast paced suspenseful music. Diegetic sound is used when Victor and Barkis Bittern are fighting the characters could hear the sword and fork clanking together when hit and when the sword chopped the alter the characters would be able to hear that. It is also used when Victor is running through the woods to get away from Emily, Victor snaps a few branches and accidently snags his shirt, all the birds and owls are squalling away. Victor’s character can hear these diegetic noises. In Edward Scissorhands Tim Burton uses non-diegetic sound to show suspense. When Peg enters Edwards mansion and when she walks up the stairs there is slow suspenseful music that shows something’s not right. When Peg figures out that Edward has scissors on his hands the music gets loud and fast, but soon stops when she realizes he’s completely harmless. When Edward gets mad because he sees Kim go towards Jim, Edward storms off and the music gets very fast and loud because Edward is mad, he cannot hear this music himself though. Diegetic sound in this movie is when Edward moves his hands; the characters can obviously hear a snipping sound. Or when Peg walks around the mansion, the characters could hear the clicking noise of her high heels on the floor. Edward’s character could…
One of the techniques Tim Burton uses to create his own world is music. Tim Burton uses music in his movies to set the mood or the tone for the scene. One example of this was in the movie “edward scissorhands” in the ice angel scene. The scene started off with a smooth loving song while edward was sculpting the angel while kim danced in the snow. While jim came and said “edward” the music changed…
Internal diegetic sound was used throughout Hitchcock’s Psycho to create the illusion that Norman Bate’s mother was still alive. Only at the very end of the film do you find out what really happened to Norman’s mother, and throughout the film the audience is wondering when they will get to match the voice with her face. The internal diegetic sound appears to be Norman’s mother talking to him, when really it’s just him talking to himself. This effect leads the viewer to think that Norman’s mother is this unstable, controlling, psycho murderer when really it’s Norman all along and he just can’t accept the fact that she’s really gone. In the last scene Norman is asked a question in his prison cell and the voice of his mother replies, indicating that the mother part of him has consumed his personality.…
Tim Burton employs the use of sharp contrasts between light and dark. In Edward Scissorhands for instance, the town consists of exaggerated pastel colours. Dark colours however are used to dramatize Edward’s castle with no sunlight ever reaching it. In the film Corpse Bride, dark colours are used when the author is alive and colourful ones when he is dead. He used low-key lighting to display eerie images and high-key lighting to display…
In a story about a girl who falls down a rabbit hole, the well known tale of Alice in Wonderland was adapted by Tim Burton in 2010, and through his use of diegetic, non-diegetic and a combination of both, Burton was able to heavily influence the mood of the movie. The first example of this is Burton's use of a mixture of diegetic and non-diegetic music while Alice was falling down the rabbit hole. The music during this scene started off as a peaceful, slow tune accompanied by a piano, a violin and other calm instruments yet as Alice was falling the music shifted, and increased dramatically in tempo. All the while, sound effects could be heard of Alice reaching out to grab anything that could slow her descent into a seemingly never ending pit. The…
The world is a hypocritical place. We are told to be ourselves yet one abnormal attribute will make you an outcast. Edward Scissorhands is a perfect example of this. The film “Edward Scissorhands” directed by Tim Burton, follows a peculiar man and how he attempts to fit into a judgemental society. At first he earns their acceptance, however one toe out of line sends him plummeting to an outcast. This film reflects our current society now, how you will also be accepted until they have a reason to hate you. Edward is a creation, he was invented with human features except hands, instead he has scissors. After the sudden death of his inventor, Edward is left isolated in a castle on a hill for many years. Because of this, he has a very innocent…
