All of this big idea helps motivated to me by telling me how Sarah Schweitz live back then and how she got out of there. It also told me how she life today and what happen back then. Her life was really scary to her because they were trying to kill her. They only wanted her,her mother, and her father.…
I was first introduced to Peter Singer’s idea of altruistic poverty at Governor’s School. It suggests that to achieve social and economic equality, individuals have to give away all they have until they reach the poverty line. While trying to wrap my mind around this questionable solution to such a complex issue, I realize that my previous way of thinking had been so egocentric. If I gave everything unnecessary for my survival what would my life look like? However, as this idea unveiled my own inadequacies as an altruistic individual, I began to wonder why capitalism does not encourage this altruism from all economic classes.…
Another way in which and action can be both altruistic and self interested is aided by the concept that altruism may lead others to think more highly of you, which is in beneficial for you and makes you feel better about yourself, so is therefore also in your self interest. An example of this is giving to charity. This may give you positive feelings as you enjoy helping others and seeing that your own actions can benefit people other than yourself. Therefore you’re being altruistic and still acting in your self interest. This then illustrates that being altruistic coincides with your self interest as you get positive outcomes by helping others.…
We should be determined to live for something. May I suggest that it be creating joy for others, sharing what we have for the betterment of person-kind, bringing hope to the lost and love to the lonely -Leo Buscaglia.” This quote is very special because I relate to this by giving those people gifts that were unexpected creates joy for them, when they get it so it brings hope to other people when they see kindness in this world happening right in front of them, because in the modern world there isn’t that much kindness.…
Selfishness is perceived as bad traits were societies only care for oneself (Selfishness, n.d.). Spencer (1897) explains that egoism takes place before altruism. Spencer (1897) strongly agrees with the evolution theory, saying that the only way for people to survive is to be selfish. It is believe that their own selfish motives are more important for their existence (Spencer 1897). It is because if an individual care or takes care of oneself first, this individual has more chance or surviving (Spencer, 1897). Whereas if people care for others more than themselves, this would lead to death for the individual meaningless care for others which can lead to extinction of species (Spencer, 1897). The less people on earth, the less problems people…
Egoism is the act of behaving self-interestedly, and is perceived as a negative trait even though it can be seen as a tool of survival (Rosenstand, 2003: 131). However, there is an opposing theory, which is altruism. Altruism is defined as a concern for the welfare of others and is considered virtuous (Rosenstand, 2003: 150). We are often made aware of heroes who risk their lives for others and these heroes inspire many. We are encouraged to be altruistic, early in our lives. Nonetheless, one notices how altruist acts usually include rewards, even if it’s just a simple thank you. This leads to questions such as, does true altruism exist, or do people always have a motive as to why they perform altruistically?…
“Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?” (Martin Luther King, Jr.)…

Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter”. He understood that although a person is breathing, he is not truly alive unless he is living for a purpose. A good life is one that is lived with the intention of constantly bettering oneself and the world in which they live. Unfortunately, this life can only be attained by making sacrifices. Time and independence are both expenses that must be paid in order to live a meaningful, and therefore good, life.…
Myles Munroe believes that, “The value of life is not in its duration, but in its donation. You are not important because of how long you live, you are important because of how effective you live.” People in the world have their own view on life, but as Munroe states, it’s not about how long a person lives but the effectiveness of what they have done with their life because it affects how the future generations will turn out. Throughout time and space, people have debated about what the purpose of life is and why do people have the opportunity to experience it. People like William Shakespeare, Robert Ebert, and Amanda Ripley all have their own appointing views on life but they all relate to each other in many different ways.…
A civil rights activist named Martin Luther King Jr. once declared “He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.” King contemplates the issue of those who choose to condone the evil and injustice they see in the world, stating that those who grow complacent with the evil are comparable to those who cause the evil themselves. He condemns those who stand passively as others are mistreated or taken advantage of. In the same vein, an Irish salesman by the name of Edmund Burke proclaimed “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”…
Psychological egoism claims that whatever we do, we do out of self-interest. Give an example of an act you think is not done out of self-interest, and explain how the psychological egoist might try to interpret that act as selfish. Respond in approximately 100 words.…

Finally, suppose both motives of altruism and warm-glow exist. One can show that as the economy grows large, warm-glow will become the dominant if not the exclusive motive for giving at the margin. While general arguments exist, perhaps it is most expedient to use a special example to motivate the result.…
Jimmy Carter once said, “I have one life and one chance to make it count for something... My faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can with whatever I have to try to make a difference.” A heartbreaking experience that occurred almost 3 years ago changed my overall perspective on life and created a new vision for me.…
