May 22, 1995, in the U.S. Term Limits, Inc. v. Thornton case the Supreme Court ruled that states cannot impose qualifications on future members of Congress stricter than what is stated in the Constitution. The case was brought to the Supreme Court when the state of Arkansas put an amendment into their state constitution that limited the number of terms any Federal Congressional and Senate candidate from Arkansas could serve. The Supreme Court ruled that “state-imposed term limits were an imperfect, and probably temporary, effort to reform a Congress whose members have become almost permanently ensconced on Capitol Hill” (Zubler 1995). I had the chance to observe and learn what a nurse leader does on a daily base on a busy cardiovascular surgical step-down floor. During my shadowing I followed assistance nurse manager for six hours, during those hours we audited floor nurse’s charting especially telemetry strip reading charting, had the chance to help out a nurse who was having a hard time drawing blood, since the ANM was good at drawing blood he jumped in to help out but, mostly we spent most of the hours going room to room between the 3 floors he managed, focusing on patients who are new admits, welcoming and orienting them to the floor, informing them on what kind of care we provide and also gathering data from patient for a QI project about “Quiet Night”.…

Nurse leaders are faced with issues or problems on a daily basis that are often expected and sometimes unexpected. It “comes with the territory” so to speak. If there were no issues to solve or hurdles to overcome the necessity of designating a leader would not seem quite as important. Nurse leaders can tackle issues that occur in their work environment using nursing theory to guide them. Nursing theory provides a framework that nurse leaders can use to implement interventions or changes to positively impact the staff they lead. This framework of the theory will set the standards for achieving the desired outcomes and is based on knowledge that is gleaned from practice and/or research. Grand, middle-range or practice theory can all be utilized by nurse leaders to guide them in practice, however, depending on the circumstances, a middle-range theory may be better than a grand theory in certain situations and vice versa. In very specific instances in which a clearly defined issue in practice is noted a practice theory may be the best choice of a nursing theory to use to address the issue. For the purpose of this paper Kolcaba’s Theory of Comfort, a middle range theory will be used as the guiding theory. Advanced practice nurses are expected to practice with competence skills throughout their careers. Hamric's Model of Advanced Nursing Practice identifies several core competencies, these competencies require that APNs utilize a depth and breadth of knowledge, skill and judgment that allow them to safely practice and competently adapt to changes in the health care environment. By using Benner’s novice to expert model, I identified my strength and weakness and I set my goals for lifelong personal and professional growth through week seven APN professional development plan. I also met the MSN essential 1X, which is Masters level nursing Practice. Though this course I have attained an advanced level of understanding of nursing and relevant sciences as well as the ability to integrate this knowledge into practice. I also met the NP core competencies of leadership competencies. I have learned about strategies that foster visionary leadership, diffusion of innovation and change within an organization.
