Advanced Nursing Practice
Advanced practice nurses are expected to practice with competence skills throughout their careers. Hamric's Model of Advanced Nursing Practice identifies several core competencies, these competencies require that APNs utilize a depth and breadth of knowledge, skill and judgment that allow them to safely practice and competently adapt to changes in the health care environment. The two competencies that I opted to enlist in my practice are leadership and consultation. I believe these two competencies will lead me in my practice as FNP to improve the delivery of care of my patients. Leadership, "Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other." stated by U.S. President John F. Kennedy. Leaders do more than delegate, dictate, and direct. They help others to achieve their highest potential, and foster communication between members of the multidisciplinary care team. Leaders have a distinctive set of personal qualities: integrity, courage, and an ability to manage stress. As well, Involves …show more content…

Thank you for your informative and detailed post. In regards to proper compensation for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN), proper documentation and accurate coding will be important (Fant & Theiss, 2015). Professional coders may perform coding to ICD-10 in larger practices, however, in smaller practices ARNPs and physicians will be doing the coding (Nicoletti, 2015). ICD-10 codes are more numerous and detailed than the ICD-9 codes (Fant & Theiss, 2015). Providers will have access to a code index and coding tools to assist them in choosing the proper codes (Fant & Theiss, 2015). ARNPs will also typically use a subset of the codes on a regular basis (Fant & Theiss, 2015). ARNPs can concentrate on becoming familiar with the codes…

I would not advise Sarah to take the position offered due to the fact that there are more than one category within the advanced practice nursing field. The role of nurse practitioner and family nurse practioners (FNP) hold their own category within the APN field and although she has passed her board exam and is certified in working as an APN, she does not have any experience in family medicine and geriatric care on paper (McClelland, 2014) . Over time, Sarah can gain exposure in the care of adult medicine and geriatrics, however to be thrown into the mix with little to know experience can have a negative impact on her patients and the medical practice that she is working for. Additionally, it is recommended that she exercise medical practice…

Inter-Professional Practice In the inter-professional health care team, a leader is a valuable member who works with others to provide high-quality care, ensuring patient safety and facilitating positive staff development in long-term care (Frankel, 2008). In many cases, the LPN is seen as a leader, taking charge, influencing and guiding others towards a mutual goal (Hood, 2010). Also, assigning roles and providing guidance to unregulated care providers (UCPs), assisting in maintaining safe work environments and advocating for residents as necessary (Rogers, 2012). Guidance is offered in The College of Licensed Practical Nurses in the form of the Standards of Practice document and Practice Guidelines documents (Rogers, 2012). Moreover, the several leadership styles that we have discussed in class can either complement or diminish the standards of practice. These styles include autocratic, democratic, laissez-faire, and participative. However, this paper will focus on the democratic style which I have identified as my own leadership style. Personal Leadership Style To begin, there are many personal characteristics that have led me to identify with the democratic leadership style. A democratic leader is one who makes members of the group feel more engaged in the process, and encourages group members to share ideas and opinions, even though the leader has the final say over decisions (Nursing Times Learning, 2008). Some other personal characteristics include working in a group to make major decisions and considering each person as a unique individual as each have their own unique personalities and abilities (Anderson, 2009). Just before entering this program, I was a lunch supervisor at a restaurant. I worked as a hostess, server, busser, and barista along side two to…

According to Dictionary.com, a strength is the quality or state of being strong, a mental power, force, or vigor; a weakness is the lack of strength, an inadequate quality. We all have and carry our own strengths and weaknesses of qualities. As I’ve learned in class this week, every nurse can be a leader. It was difficult to see the leader in myself until I took the Nurse Manager Skills Inventory by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. There are four areas I am going to discuss here about the Inventory: First is my personal and professional accountability as a nurse; second is career planning; thirdly is my personal journey disciplines; and fourth, and final, area is my reflective practice reference behaviors/tenants.…
