Effects Of Distracted Driving
Imagine a teenager driving home from a football game late Friday night. Its pitch dark out and the teen can barely see when completely focused on the road. Then the teen feels his phone ring in his pocket and he reaches to check it, taking his eyes from the road for just a split second and then bang, he swerves off the road and hits a mailbox. Of course this isn’t an extreme example of what can happen from texting or distracted driving but it is dangerous none the less. One of the most common deaths in teens is car accidents and texting and driving is a major contributor to that fact. Is a single text worth the risk of a person’s life? The driver would have to pay for the repairs to the car, increased insurance costs, court costs, and the costs of hiring a lawyer. The cost to repair the car will vary but it could cost up to half the amount the driver bought the car for. Insurance costs will drastically increase because once someone get in an accident that person becomes a liability and that gives the insurance companies the ability to charge a lot more per month for their insurance. Court cost can cost hundreds of dollars; not to mention a good lawyer can cost thousands. All these charges can build up very quickly so it is so much cheaper just to drive safely and wait to answer the text until the driver gets to a safe location. Texting and driving, or distracted driving, is becoming a major issue in America. Many teens and young adults do it because they have this sense of unbridled invincibility. They do not understand the real life risk of the distracted driving and the costs of actually having an accident. If these people could realize these things they would turn off the cell phones while driving and completely focus on driving. Distracted driving is taking the lives of so many people and we have the means to stop it through
