The most intriguing aspect of Dagoberto Gilb’s story Love in L.A. is how realistic it really is. Generally, love stories follow the traditional pattern of two strangers meeting, falling in love and living happily ever after. Love in L.A by no means follows this pattern. Many real life romantic relations do not follow this pattern either. Not following the pattern, however, does not disqualify Love in L.A. from being a love story. The essay is still very much a love story only with a twist.…
At a young age, Oscar was what nowadays you may call a “player”, he had girls left and right and at times couldn’t even decide which one he wanted more. He was “one of those preschool loverboys who was always trying to kiss the girls, always coming up behind them during a merengue and giving them the pelvic pump” (p.11). However, one day Oscar lost his touch; it could have been the Fuku, the Dominican family curse, but that did not matter because Oscar was no longer the “player” he used to be. He languished in his room playing video games, eating and becoming larger and writing his fiction novels. There was no love, no social life and the only females he would speak to on a daily basis were his mother and sister. The dilemma was the moment Oscar would come into contact with another girl, he would fall head over heels “in love”. He would dream about her day and night admiring every perfect quality and flaw she had, Oscar became obsessive. But, Oscar was severely depressed, he even tried to kill himself when the girl he loved did not love him back. When one is not exposed to love one loses all their self worth. Oscar may have had other issues that caused his depression, but the force of love is so strong and so crucial for the survival of a human being that without it one can almost wither away, as Oscar did.…
In Love in the Time of Cholera Garcia-Marquez tells a unjust story of love. The protagonist Florentino Ariza suffers through “fifty-three years, seven months, and eleven days and nights,” (Marquez 348) to be happily reunited with the love of his life. For Garcia-Marquez to allow one of his characters to endure such an awful experience he must have had discouraging encounters with love himself. Garcia-Marquez believes that love is an inevitable disease that we will all have to suffer through at some point in our life.…
The collection of texts presented in this essay depicts an underlying theme of love. The texts have been examined and explored in order to note the similarities or differences in various categories. To compare two texts by the length of their stanza would be to diminish the value of its words; indeed a comparison of texts must come from the connotation.…
The film Enduring Love deals with a number of different characters and their lives after participating in a traumatic event with each other. In this paper I will defend the thesis that the title “Enduring Love” is misleading; not only is it not love, but it is also not enduring. The tragic event that the characters share together transformed their lives into something that cannot be defined as “enduring love”. In order to defend this thesis Section One will define key terms such as love, enduring, transformation, and tragic. Section Two will offer examples from the film that will defend my thesis. Section three will answer potential objections to my thesis. Finally the conclusion will summarize what the paper has proven.…
“Keep love in your hearts. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead.”-Oscar Wilde Wilde hints at, that without love, your heart is like dead flowers in a sunless garden. Whereas, if there is love in your heart, your garden is full of blooming flowers. Love is a strong connection between people or objects that means a lot to them. In “Death and Transfiguration of a Teacher” Solari expresses the love between money and poetry. However, “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World” portrays love between two unique people. In the stories “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World” and “Death and Transfiguration” both Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Maria Teresa Solari embody love as a metaphor throughout the story.…
The different educational level of Rodriguez and his parents has made it difficult for Rodriguez to communicate with them as he were mostly into books. After finding the pleasure of education and knowledge at school, he expect some reactions on sharing his thoughts and reflections with his parents but unfortunately, the lack of abilities his parents possessed made him unsatisfied, unfulfilled and upset with their condition. “His academic success distances him from a life he loved, even from a memory of himself (Rodriguez)”.…
After reading the book Love Dose by Bob Goff many wonderful Ideas stuck with me. I am amazed at how many truly wonderful things happened to one man. It brings me comfort to know that there are people out there like Bob who love’s all people, no matter what. Goff loves people not just because Jesus said to, but because he wants to. That concept to me is amazing and truly meaningful. The story that stuck out to me the most was the first chapter. I promise I read the book, but even after finishing the book over a month ago the first chapter stuck with me the most.…
The theme of everlasting and all-consuming love is revealed by the writer's message that no matter what happens in life, extreme love is reachable. In this moment, nothing is more important than his love. His message is introduced as a hopeless question, "So what good would living do me?".…
What is Love? Does anyone really know the meaning of the word? Does it have a different meaning to different people? In Kipnis’s essay “Love Labors”, Laura Kipnis touches on many different aspects of love. This is a touchy subject simply because love brings out many different opinions and beliefs. Kipnis argues over the fact that in order to have a good relationship and love someone people have to be able to meet certain requirements, which are mutuality, communication, and advanced intimacy.…
Esperanza is not a significant supporter of the gender positions that continue to keep women in her neighborhood demoralized. The men on Mango Street abuse not only their wives but also their daughters and imprison them in the home. Many times just being a woman can cause reason for such abuse. This is a fact that can be observed in the beatings which unfortunately Sally continuously gets, and also in the rape of Esperanza. Esperanza presents us with an analysis of the way men and women relate to each other and refuse to abide by the demands applied to her sex by marriage or perhaps acting in a womanly way. For our character, disobeying gender position and staying independent is considered an act of rebellion as well as a source of power.…
I also like other quotes by Ortega y Gasset like: “Love is that splendid triggering of human vitality, the supreme activity which nature affords anyone for going out of himself toward someone else”, but I decided to write about the quote mentioned above because along my childhood my mother always pointed out to me that people will judge me for my friends, my looks, for what clothes I will wear, for what I read, I say or do, in conclusion, for everything. As the years goes on, I found out this sad truth and how people can very easy judge us for a dress or what car we drive or worse, for what college we attend to and what friends we choose to have by our side.…
Through Ovid's Metamorphosis the majority of the characters experience love in some way, shape or form. Relative to them all is the happy ending love fails to deliver. It's almost better to not be in love because nothing good comes from it. The idea of “Love” is an intense or deep feeling of affection and is usually a pleasant thing. Today's society has been conditioned to associate love with good and happiness, but the metamorphosis challenges that and shows another side of love. It explores almost all possible aspects of sexuality and incorporates love into the situation to come to a unifying result or resolution.…
Tita’s marriage bedspread shows how love cannot fully satisfy one’s needs. Pedro’s bouquet of roses reveals the harm and pain in a romantic relationship. Lastly, the over-powered sex represents true love finally coming together, but ending in lifelessness. Although it is desirable for true love to be effortless and untroubling, the author not only shows the goodness and richness of love, but also exposes the hardships and pessimistic outcomes…
