Essential Intrapartum and Newborn Care
The Essential Intrapartum and Newborn Care (EINC) are set of practices that upon recommendations of the Department of Health, PhilHealth, and the World Health Organization are adopted by Dr. Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research and Medical Center because of its evidence based standards that reduce maternal and newborn mortality rate. It supports the national commitment to the United Nations Millenium Development Goals (MDG) 4 and 5 by the year 2015. These practices are totally different from the traditional newborn care some of its objectives are to provide evidence-based practices to ensure survival of the newborn from birth up to the first 28 days of life.
EINC delivers time-bound core intervention in the immediate period after the delivery of the newborn by immediate drying to stimulate the baby to cry, properly timed cutting of the umbilical cord and also routine suctioning is eliminated if the baby is considered well. It strengthens health facility environment for breastfeeding initiation to take place and for breastfeeding to be continued from discharge up to 2 years of life it is done by initial breastfeeding few moments after the delivery of the baby and strict prohibition of bottle feeding inside the hospital as well as encouragement of breastfeeding. The EINC provides appropriate and timely emergency newborn care to newborns in need of resuscitation by early and accurate assessment of the infant’s adjustment of the outside world. It ensures access of newborns to affordable life-saving medicines to reduce deaths and morbidity from leading causes of newborn conditions through the application of Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment, injection of Phytomenadione and vaccines after the infant is fully breastfed to ensure healthy future of the infant. It also ensures inclusion of newborn care in the overall approach to the Maternal, Newborn, Child Health and Nutrition Strategy.
