Thinking about a better future, one day she, three of her siblings, and her mother decided to come to the United States. They paid about five hundred dollars per person for someone as they call it in Mexico “El Coyote” to help them cross the border.“El Coyote” is a person who smuggles immigrants to the United States with for a cost. They stayed a couple of days in Mexicali with one of their relatives still indecisive about coming to the United States. When they all made a firm decision about coming to the U.S., they took the bus from Mexicali to Tijuana. It was one warm night, when they crossed the border of Tijuana. Both of her sons have been diagnosed with a genetic disease called Muscular Dystrophy and there is no cure for it. According to “Muscular Dystrophy,” Muscular Dystrophy is “a group of genetic diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass.” Both of her sons have already lost their ability to walk and each day that passes by, they lose their muscle strength. Her oldest son is a little over weight and every morning she must carry him from the bed to his electric wheelchair or to use the restroom. They have school accommodations; a bus with a ramp comes to pick them up and drop them off; they must access to an elevator; and help them use the restroom. Every six months they go to Shriners Hospital. Shriners Hospitals for children specializes in children with rare diseases. In that hospital, they see a cardiologist, pulmonary doctor, neurologist, nutritionist and other medical specialists. Every Tuesday when they come from school, she takes them to therapy. The therapy helps them stretch their muscles and delays the loss of their muscle and joints. At night, they have to wear braces to have their muscles stretched out.
