Ela Block Observation
For my ELA block observation, I went to Westwood Elementary School. I observed a first grade class, which had 21 students. There was 10 males, and 11 females in this class. In the class room there was a TV that was playing a slide show, which had the learning standards for the day. The Language Arts objectives were Grammar: subject pronoun, Writing: narrative writing, Story: sentences, and Focus Trait: voice. Before they started their lesson, the kids were given 15 minutes to read their AR books and able to take AR tests. I was able to walk around and help demonstrate the correct pronunciation of the words. Some kids had their reading down, and some just needed a little support. They all worked very well together to figure out how to spell the word. Their next instructions were to write sentences using at least three of their spelling words. The kids were to work quietly and by themselves. The teacher walked around and supported each child when they needed the help. At this time, I noticed the teacher had different types of desks for the children to sit at. The first type of desk was a regular sized table with wobble chairs, so the children could wobble while still focusing on their lesson. The second table was tables that had stability ball chairs. This allowed the students to bounce up and down, while at their desk. The third type of desk was high tables with high chairs. This allowed the students to sit or stand during the lesson. The fourth type of table was the chair bands. This was a regular table with regular chairs that had stretchy chair bands down at their feet, so they could bounce their legs on the band. The last table was a low table that had pillow to sit on. I personally loved the idea of this. It gave the kids that had a problem focusing a chance to learn without getting distracted. I also loved the idea of boxing and cheering out the spelling

    I must say, according to my observation in the scenario I really see two strategies that is being used to help the E.L.Ls. The strategies was used on Maria that just arrived in the class but has been there for only five months. What I observed was that the teacher has a student helping her and is making sure she is involved in all activities. This will help her build her social development skills. But the downfall is that her speech will not improve since the teacher is really not doing much to help her with her speech. But on a good note he is considering on getting her tested for her speech to make sure she does not have a disability. My second observation was from his E.L.L student, Mikhail. I really don’t see that he is using any strategy to help him when it comes down to his social skills. This might be because He has been in the states a lot longer. This is an advantage he has on Maria when it comes to social development skills. But the teacher is concerned with his writing Since he sees that his level in speaking English is so dominant and it is not falling in place with his writing and he seem a little confused and not sure how to address the situation.…

    Based on the fact that 20.6% of the district population are in the ELL program, an instructional strategy I would use in the classroom is using small groups and model desired skills and outcomes. ELL students need a lot of modeling and visual aids when it comes to instruction, without that, and just using lectures will have the students confused and lost and not understand the information they are receiving, but if the teacher is modeling what is expected of them, especially if they are active during, even if they do not understand the language, they can still visually see what is expected.     Her assistant teacher is riding the bus at this time of the day picking the students up. While waiting for the students to arrive Ashley is getting everything ready for the day ahead. She would either getting things ready for small groups, get the music ready for the day or she might be cleaning up anything that might be still laying around from the day before. Once her eighteen students arrive at eight A.M. she lets them play with table toys for about ten to fifteen minutes. Breakfast is served at eight fifteen. Once the children are done eating breakfast the children go to centers and are called to brush their teeth while they are playing in center.     There were two Caucasian students, seven African-American students, and six Mexican students. Mrs. Brodie was the teacher and Ms. Johnson was the teacher assistant. The classroom was large and there was plenty of space for the children to move about. The classroom structure was very similar to that of the 3-year-old classroom that I observed in my first field observation. There was also a carpet on the floor for circle time and the classroom was divided up into centers as well. The centers were clearly labeled. Some of the centers included reading, art, science, manipulatives, and blocks. As I stated before it was very similar to the 3-year-old classroom set-up. The classroom was filled with print and there were many different aspects of cultural references which included posters in the Spanish language and books that represented the different diversity of all of the students.     Evidence-based instruction includes reliable and valuable data obtained from your classroom. When you apply basil tests, unit tests, exit slips, and acuity assessments you need to collect the data from your classroom to organize your classroom groups. You should also use this data to decide who needs AIS or tiered interventions for certain areas. Instructional practices include the previously mentioned assessments. Pretests for all units of instruction can also help you understand what your students already know and who is weak in certain areas. For example, a unit on main idea and details using passages can be difficult for some students. Running records will help to determine what reading level your students are on. From this data, you are able to place your students into their reading groups. After they are in their reading groups, you can determine from their acuity pre-tests, which skills that your students are weaker in. It’s also about finding out which students can be enriched as well. Making these groups can guide your instruction for the unit. You can place students who are low readers and have trouble finding the main idea in one group, give them an activity where they are given the main idea (so they become familiar with main idea) and one or two details and have them find a few more on their own with guidance from the teacher. If it is an ICT class, the special education teacher can work with this group. Another group may be given the main idea and have to find all details, and the higher readers may have to find both the main idea and the supporting details. Using these activities can help you to see who understands the lesson as it is going on, as well as who may need extra support. Quizzes, tests, post acuity tests can also provide much data driven evidence to support your completion of the lesson and if your students have mastered the skill.…
