Elegy In Beowulf
Who I Aspire To Be
(An Elegy of Great Aunt Norma Dell) As we grow older we learn many things from day to day. We learn from experience that life has to end. Remembering someone who has died is very important, however. A great way to keep these memories close is to write an elegy about the loved one who has passed. This tradition can be traced back many years, even to the times when the Western Roman Empire fell to Germanic tribes in the fifth century A.D. and the age of the Anglo-Saxon civilization. The long epic poem of Beowulf is argued to be an elegy itself about the great hero Beowulf. The warrior had lived his days and fought his last battle where he died and left a few words of how he wanted to be remembered. The whole tale is a form

This is something that I was able to witness myself as well as hear it from all of my other family members. Even if the day had turned for the worst, this woman would always try to find some small positive thing. This quality was something who really defined my aunt’s character. I personally remember one day when we had plans to go to the river and go out fishing and right as soon as we were about to get in the car a huge Florida storm came rolling in depleting our chanced of doing much of anything all day. Yet, aunt Norma Dell pulled out some old games and puzzles and we enjoyed our rainy day almost as much as we would have if we went fishing. This trait might seem simple to some people, but her ability to point out the good in every possible situation is a gift that I have great admiration …show more content…
From starting with hardly any education and building twice the life that most people dream of is something remarkable itself. Then, to live her daily life focused on the bright side and not once dwelling with any negative, this woman was utterly amazing. I will aspire to be but half of who she was and what she made of herself. I am very fortunate to have known someone so God-like and down to earth to know what kind of person I would like to see myself as when I grow up. Not to mention, the amazing meals that she had prepared for a countless amount of people. I truly respect my great aunt Norma Dell and everything she had taught me in her wonderful times here on

The society of Beowulf does not believe that grief is the solution to the deaths of their loved ones or leaders. Instead of becoming sad, the people simply get angry and vow to take revenge upon the person who committed the murder, which is usually by killing that person. The solution to their grief is more death. It is only human to grieve so the people in the Beowulf world, including Beowulf himself, are quite inhuman, monstrous even. They fight death with more death, the punish by following the system of eye for an eye. King Hrethal represents humanity in this past society. He represents the good traits in humans while the rest of the characters represent the bad. While Beowulf’s is portrayed as humble and heroic, there…

Beowulf can be analyzed in an endless numbers of ways. There are different morals, themes, and meanings behind the story. A common meaning, maybe even the most important, is the dual ordeal in Beowulf. The dual ordeal is an external battle with vicious opponents and an internal battle with human tendencies of pride, greed, cowardice, betrayal, and self concern. Each external battle Beowulf wins, his internal battle grows.…

The Anglo-Saxon society that inhabited Britain from 449-1066 was composed of Germanic warriors who idolized honor, strength, and war. In the epic poem Beowulf, the beliefs regarding these values were displayed. “Behavior that's admired is the path to power among people everywhere”(“Prologue” 25-26). This quote demonstrates how people would strive to be the best warrior they could possibly be to attain honor and admiration from others. By showing how strong and dedicated one was through battle, he would become respected by the other warriors in the clan. The efforts made by warriors in battles were displayed during funerals. For example, when Shield Sheafson died, “Far fetched treasures were piled upon him, and precious gear.”(Prologue 37-38).…

She taught me that even though when sometimes everything is going wrong, that you need to keep your head up and keep moving forward. She lost her parents, but stayed strong. She was caught two times by the Nazis, and escaped with her family’s help. She was caught a last time, and this time, she was bound to die. While in the tunnel, she could hear the screams of the Jews getting tortured, but managed to persevere and make it out alive. I believe that is important to not give up, as well as keep moving forward even when times get rough. Nothing lasts forever, and that applies to harsh feelings as well. Everyone should remember that if you put bad things in the past, it’ll be forgotten…

1b) The three examples of sympathy and no sympathy in Beowulf, the first of Beowulf telling his very boastful story, one of Grendel origins and the third of feeling sympathy for Grendel because of his origins. The first is when the reader is supposed to not feel sympathy for Beowulf when he boasts about his adventure at sea "...I was the strongest swimmer of all. / …. Each of us swam holding a sword, / a naked, hard- proofed blade for protection/ against the whale- beast. /.... pinned fast/ and swathed in its grip, I was granted one/ final chance; my sword plunged/ and the orderdeal was over/"(line 534-557). Beowulf as tradition goes has bragging rights but this also gives our narrator an unreliable edge because it is not possible to hold your…

The 8th century epic poem Beowulf illustrates a loss of community, cultural values and tradition. On the other hand, an elegiac passing of an extraordinary hero and the relationship between the themes of mortality and heroism are well discussed in Beowulf. Beowulf’s character exemplifies the Germanic and the Anglo-Saxon ideals of the hero: strong, fearless, bold, loyal, and stoic in the acceptance of fate. Despite his lack of humility, Beowulf was the definition of a hero in his own time by his demonstration of chivalry and his important roles in society.…

    Betrayal In Beowulf

Betrayal. Deceit. The Rosenbergs. Described by History.com as a married couple, with two sons, they were convicted of leading a spy ring to pass U.S. atomic secrets to the Soviet Union. Controversy over the death sentence ensued, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower replied that “...the Rosenbergs may have condemned to death tens of millions of innocent people all over the world”; that the death of millions is even graver than the death of two ("Rosenbergs Executed"). Besides the controversy over the sentence and execution, the betrayal, or the idea of betrayal, threw people into a fit of arguing and debate. Just as a nation goes into uproar about espionage, aiding the enemy and defying one’s character, a friend or a family will go into a proportional uproar over lying and irresponsibility, pushing aside one’s values and morals. While the characters in Beowulf and Lord of the Flies show loyalty in conquering the beast in the forest, the struggle to accept their identity causes strife within the characters.…
