Elements of Nonfiction

While some readers enjoy getting lost in imaginary world of fiction, others prefer the authenticity of stories from real life.
Nonfiction is writing about real people, places, and events.
There are two broad categories of nonfiction. One category, called informative nonfiction, is mainly written to provide factual information. Nonfiction of this type includes science and history texts, informational books, encyclopedias, pamphlets, and most of the articles in magazines and newspapers.
The other category of nonfiction is called literary nonfiction because it is written to be read and experienced in much the same way you experience fiction. However, literary nonfiction differs from fiction in that real people take the place of fictional characters, and setting and plots are not imagined but are actual places and true events.
The following are some types of nonfiction literary:

1. Autobiography: An autobiography is the true story of a person's life, told by that person. It is almost always written using first-person point of view.
A autobiography is usually book length because it covers a long period of writer's life. However, there are shorter types of autobiographical writing such as journals, diaries, and memoirs.

2. Biography: A biography is the true story of a person's life told by someone else. The writer, or biographer, interviews the subject if possible and also reaches the person's life by reading letters, books, diaries, and any other information he or she can find.

3. Essay: An essay is a piece of nonfiction writing that deals with one subject. Essays are often found in newspapers and magazines. The writer might share an opinion, try to entertain or persuade the reader, or simply describe an incident that has special significance. These essays that explain how the author feels about a subject are called informal, or personal essay.

The relationship between fiction and nonfiction is very elaborate. The book, The Accident Season by Moira Fowley-Doyle deals with a family experiencing accidents each year in October and now they want to figure out why. In the book, Cara and her ex-step-brother accidentally fall in love. This tends to happen more often than we think in the world we live in. Fiction is a story that is created from your imagination but can also be inspired by true events. Nonfiction is a true story about real people and real events. But fiction reading is able to influence our ideas about real life.…

Throughout history, writers have developed different types of genres to help form their own unique story. Different types of genres are used throughout our society today. Both of the books I read this summer, The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver and The Giver, by Lois Lowry both have different genres. Kingsolver portrays an adventure, while Lowry shows fiction. Both authors have applied different types of techniques to get the attention of the reader.…

How true are the stories that are told in an autobiography? Nancy Mairs would say that each person has their own way of looking at an event. The autobiographies of Black Elk and Oishi Junkyo bring up many questions of truth and subjectivity. These autobiographies show that personal accounts are subjective and language, memory, the motives of the writer/translator, make autobiography that much more subjective.…

It is the book that doesn't fit into any category. A fiction book is all made up but the war happened and things that we read about did happen so it can’t be pure fiction. It reads most like a memoir of all things. The majority of the book is between him, his unit which acts like family and their stories about Vietnam. A memoir is a factual story but The Things They Carried, while not a factual story is based mostly on facts and it does read like a short novel. All the “chapters” read like their own individual short story but they link to each other allowing it to still be read like a novel or many small reports. The question is why would O'Brien choose to write the novel the way he…

    Lena Dunham's Memoir

I do agree that the line is incredibly blurry. Thinking and writing about this topic this week made me wonder if it’s not a line but rather a chasm of murky water. Throughout the years, there’s been a number of nonfiction books that have been exposed as fabrications in one way or another. In the book, they talked about A Million Little Pieces, and the classification changing from nonfiction to “semi-fictional.” I also remember reading about Lena Dunham’s memoir and how a story about a supposed sexual assault was called into question due to facts not aligning properly. In theory, there seems to be a thin line separating creative nonfiction from all out fiction, and I think that as time goes by that chasm or line grows smaller…

My favorite fiction story I read in the textbook is “Hunters in the Snow” by Wolff. This story is a literary fiction because it interpreted real life situations. All through the story, Tub was faced with the harsh treatment of Kenny and Frank until Tub finally had enough. Everything started turning around for Tub after he shot Kenny in the woods. At the end of the story the readers find out that they made the wrong turn going towards the hospital but Tub, Kenny, and Frank don’t know that so it leaves the following scene as a mystery. Fiction literature is extravagant for whatever reason anyone would like because of the fantasy it brings…

Narrative of Frederick Douglass is an autobiography. It's the story of his life from the time he was born a slave to the time of his escape to freedom in the North. He then added a valuable political viewpoint in his story. When Douglass wrote this book in 1845, slavery was still legal in most of the Country. He became educated and then a public speaker and writer to try to stop it. He believed that if he showed people what he and many slaves went through, they would understand why it needed to be ended. Even though he tell us his personal story, he never forgets his goal of abolishing slavery.…
