Elizabeth Feltner: Observation In The Classroom
Midway through her pricey caffeinated latte, Elizabeth Feltner poised herself to commence steadfast into mock interview. Despite being a veteran of fourteen years of teaching, nonetheless, butterflies fluttered within her breadbasket. Analogous to other passionate educators Elizabeth engaged in this interview as if I was a prospective administrator. Instantaneously the halcyon backdrop of Starbucks evaporated as our interview journey initiated. Opening with the generic yet, underrated query of why are you here? Elizabeth launched into her appreciation of working for students. Elizabeth described the kinship and community connection that is vital to educating students. Furthermore she added that, “I work for more than a paycheck, I work for the community. Each time I step in front of students, their parents trust me to provide their children with the best education possible.” Her response challenged my thinking in ways I never completed previously. working for the community was oppiste o. Graciously thanking her I said goodbye and remained perched on the wooden armchair contemplating her responses. Introspectively, analyzing my questions, concluding they elicited the responses I value in an educator. Elizabeth was an exceptional candidate because she articulated impassioned responses. In addition, her “teacher with-it-ness” resulted from trial and error mentality that developed from numerous years of educating students. Consistently, Elizabeth’s responses focused on others rather than herself or her content. Reviewing her words revealed she concentrated on what she offers the world rather than what the world offers to her.     We are writing to you to advocate for the continuance of Miss. Degenhardt’s (Profe) teaching career at Darien High School. We write with the purpose to make you aware of Profe’s profound impact on the community and the growth of her students both in the context of academics and ethics; her notable qualities and dedication to her profession are of a role model. While Profe’s style of teaching is unorthodox at some points, this unorthodoxy provides students with a diverse and meaningful education in an otherwise, orthodox day. A quality that is central to Profe’s teaching and persona is her receptiveness to student opinion, which in our opinion should be a constant in all student-teacher relationships. For example, if a student feels that a decision in terms of either a grade or punishment she made was unjust, Profe is fully open to a one-on-one discussion, either during a mutual free or before or after school. Profe’s actions reject the notion of “my way or the highway” and epitomize the characteristic of open-mindedness: a quality that is crucial in our increasingly globally connected society. For a personal anecdote, during a student’s sophomore year he felt that he did not deserve grade X; therefore, he approached Profe and asked to meet with her before school. The student and Profe discussed the grade and while the grade remained unchanged, he had a better understanding as to why he received grade X and how he can avoid receiving grade X in the future. In another, unrelated circumstance, Profe organizes an annual in-class food drive to afford families in the Bronx a decent Thanksgiving meal, which reveals her altruism and devotion to paying it forward. Moments such as these are what define Profe’s impact and overall career to DHS and academia. As a community, we are here to support a teacher who has supported us.     Not only did I feel proud for making interdisciplinary connections when explaining things, but I was also able to support my friends. My peers would walk into math tutoring completely clueless, but would walk out offering to teach others the material.     It was obvious that Ms. Brown had created a plan for this lesson by observing the progression of the skills that were being taught and that they were presented in a logical order that aided student comprehension. Both the students and the teacher were familiar with the skills and the delivery. She also posts lesson plans online. Objectives and expectations of the lesson were communicated to the students on a special place on the board, at the front of the class with essential questions and " I can" statements. Ms. Brown was able to gain the students' attention for the lesson with a hook type activity. It was an engaging question for the student to answer that was related to the topic. Students worked independently, in pairs and in groups and read a selection either by themselves or with another student. The material was then presented in a graphic organizer by the teacher with illustrations and relevant examples provided by the students. They also read the selection (either our loud to a partner or to themselves) and then the material was displayed in the form of a graphic organizer for the visual learners.
