At the age of 17, Elon moved to Canada to attend Queens University and avoid mandatory service in the South African military. In 2007 when production was about to start, the actual selling price of the electric sports car was twice as high as the originally implied price of $92,000. Additionally the CEO Martin Eberhard made a strategic miscalculation, in which his concept of transmission for the Roadster proved to be ineffective. This lead to the release of the car being postponed and Tesla missing the shipping date. Musk decided to fire everyone who caused the projects development to be stalled, mainly the CEO Martin Eberhard which is when Elon Musk decided to become CEO himself. To further control the crisis Musk continued to drastically cut costs effectively by demanding lower prices from suppliers, closing some of the office and reducing staff. This resulted in tesla Roadster being released in 2008 with a minor increase in price. Musk was able to achieve all this by using his critical management skills as well as the use of Legitimate Power due to his formal job authority. To overcome this speedbump, Musk takes great initiative by hiring thousands of new employees to create a third shift which reduced the burden on everyone and had a huge influence in lowering the injury rate. Furthermore, Musk sent out a companywide email stating how important the safety of each employee is for him. He also instructed that every injury be reported to him directly, as well as how he would like to meet with every injured person so that he can better learn from them how the working environment can be made safer. He would then perform the task they were given so that he can better understand the danger levels associated with it. I unquestionably agree with his quick action as through this example Elon Musk once again exhibits great leadership through Emotional Intelligence. Not only does he show his concern for his workers safety but also makes sure that as a leader he must practice what he preaches while he sets an example. By working alongside his employees he shows how he isn’t all talk and how he is trying to understand the situation through their perspective. Even though it is very time
