Elvis Presley: The King of Rock and Roll
Elvis Presley was not only the “King of Rock and Roll”, but could also be said as the king of his time period. “He brought together American music from both sides of the color line and performed it with a natural hip-swiveling sexuality that made him a teen idol and a role model for generations of cool rebels.” (Pareles 438). Elvis Presley made a huge difference in the music world. There is no quesion about it. “Teens related positively to his sexiness, especially the suggestive way he swiveled his hips as he sang.” (Rubel 772). To make a difference is to make someone else’s life change greatly. Elvis changed all of music. He made rock and roll come alive. Along the way, Elvis had plenty of influences and great stories which made the amazing career he had come to a beginning. Elvis Presley sang rock and roll like no one ever had before. Elvis Presley enjoyed music from the day he was born. “Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in East Tupelo, Mississippi.” (Pareles 437). “Elvis’ twin brother, Jesse Garon, was stillborn, and Presley grew up an only child.” (Pareles 438). Elvis began to enjoy music at an early age because he was influenced by a lot of different people and things. “As early as the third grade, Elvis sang at school assemblies.” (Denenberg 9). “Going to the First Assembly of God Church and getting a guitar for his birthday in 1948 were two of many things that got Presley interested in music.” (Pareles 438). “His Uncle Vester and the pastor at the church taught him some chords.” (Denenberg 12). When Elvis was in school, he was a bit strange. “Elvis was new to Milam Junior High and was even poorer than the poor kids.” (Denenberg 11). “He was shy, awkward, and looked and felt uncomfortable- like he didn’t belong.” (Denenberg 11). “Some of the kids, who weren’t big fans, stole his guitar one day and cut the strings. But some of the other kids pooled their money and bought new ones because they felt bad.” (Denenberg 12). Elvis also had to deal with his family
