In Gray’s Late Ferry he is portrayed with fear and uncertainty into the future, which leads to the past. Through his nostalgic attitude, the audience reflects on the future and discovers that Gray must move on from his past experiences. In the beginning of the poem Gray describes the ferry going into “the huge dark harbour”, this statement highlights the use visual imagery of the adjectives “dark” and “huge” which carry meaning of the unknown. This emphasises the vulnerability of the ferry which shows that as people we move out beyond our problems and into …show more content…
the unknown. Gray uses the technique juxtaposition throughout the poem of an natural and man-made image. This is shown in the third stanza when Gray states “street lights’ fluorescence over the dark water”, this simile uses a natural activity to show the effect of the lights in the water. This juxtaposition shows Gray’s apprehension to progress and uniqueness, which shows his fear of the future. Therefore discoveries can be new and refreshing or challenging and confronting as throughout Gray’s Late Ferry he is trying to hide away from his nostalgic past.
Similarly, Phil Hensen’s ted talk “Embrace the Shake” explores the same concept of self discovery to being either new and refreshing or challenging and confronting.
Within the auditory text, the ted talker Phil Hansen expresses that the unexpected obstacle was “the destruction of my dream becoming an artist.” Thus highlighting the use of the timbre to demonstrate the reality he was going to face in his life as he is losing the ability to make art. This technique emphasises to the audience about the sudden changes that any individual can face. Phil further states “But as I searched around in the darkness, I realized I was actually paralyzed by all of the choices that I never had before.” This statement highlights the use of repetition of the word ‘I’ which refers to first person dialogue as it emphasises his newfound realisation of the challenge he faced to overcome his problem. Through his discovery of understanding his problem, he is able to overcome his challenge by accepting it, as he embraces the change and he understands that it could be used to his
advantage.
Overall, Robert Gray’s poem “Late Ferry” and Phil Hansen ted talk “Embrace the Shake” both explore the concept of self-discovery, but alter the discovery to being either new and refreshing or challenging and confronting through language and auditory techniques.
