Obstacles of Communication
Communication is an extremely important factor in our everyday lives, yet it’s also something we often take for granted because it’s something we have been exposed to even before birth. Most of us have never had the misfortune to be in a completely different country with not just a different culture, but different language, having to rely on someone to express what you’re really thinking or feeling. At the young age of 10, still so naïve coming to live in the United States appeared to be the best option that my family and I would ever possibly have. My ignorance and innocence never took into consideration the obstacles I was about to confront, and most importantly having to overcome the factor of not comprehending English.
Due to the economic factor of living in Mexico and having my father so far away from my family and my mother not being able to support 3 children she made the decision to move back to the states. She along with my two brothers and I decided to depart from our home in Mexico to once again move to Petaluma, the city in which both my brother and I were born. I was anxious to see my new home, to make new friends at school, but most importantly meet my fathers’ side of the family.
And so the journey began, I crossed the border by car. The border patrol asked to see proof of citizenship, and then asked me, “How are you?” I sat there quiet, not understanding what he had just said to me. Being so naïve never did it come to mind that I was about to begin a whole new journey, with many challenges heading my direction. I was standing in an environment with people speaking an unfamiliar language.
I clearly remember my first day of school, I was innocent not thinking that anyone would be incapable of understanding me, I only spoke Spanish. I walked into my 4th grade classroom with Mr. Fischera with around twenty-eight students and amongst those 28 was my
