Team Case Study
Emerging Trends is an important topic no matter what type of business you are in. Being able to keep up with what is going to be big, what is big, and what was big can be a priceless tool when attempting to maintain a company. Team D has chosen to discuss Case 5.4 Emerging Trends: Managing with a Shortage. In this paper Team, D will tell you why we chose this case study and will provide a short and detailed summary on what Managing with a Shortage means to Team D.
Case 5.4 Emerging Trends: Managing with a shortage was chosen because we felt like it was something that we could all relate to. This decision is based on the idea that all the members of team D have worked for or know someone who works for a company that has or has had workplace shortages or high turnover positions. Another reason we chose this case is because we are in a field that requires us to adapt, and Case 5.4 gives a …show more content…
chance to relate and explore overcoming shortages in the workplace.
This case focuses on the fact that not all jobs or careers are treated equally. There are many jobs that are essential to the functioning of society but not necessarily esteemed or highly sought after. In order for society or structures to survive every aspect of life must be addressed. This case focuses on how important mechanics are to the operation of daily life. If we didn’t have mechanics, who would work on fire trucks, ambulances, or other essential vehicles? It is informative and eye opening about how important it is to retain individuals for these positions and to recruit new and excited talent to keep operations running now and in the future.
The shortage of educated employees is crucial in most fields. An example of the lack of needed employees can be seen when we look towards the health care system. With baby boomers aging and retiring, we are losing many of our medical personnel, and yet we are gaining that many more elderly patients. There would be no worry if there were more young adults vying for medical positions. Truthfully because of the meager amount that medical personnel get paid; most of the younger generations are all together overlooking the medical field for higher paying jobs. If the trends follow in this direction, we might see the collapse of the medical field as we know it.
We were going to answer one of the questions at the end of the case study, but Team D thought both questions were equally important, so we did them both.
1. Do you think that the worker shortages, such as those described, in this case, are a short-term problem or a long-term problem?
Answer: The worker 's deficiencies described, in this case, are a short-term problem. This problem can be resolved by developing new strategies and thinking differently about the workforce, workplace and the managing of Human Resources. There are keys to maintaining an adequate workforce by number and skill; the first would be to redesign the work processes, and introduce new technology so that it would increase the effectiveness, employee satisfaction and efficiency. Also, it is important to have a plan to attract a new generation of workers and to retain the current workers as long as possible.
2. Will increased wages solve the shortage problem? Why or why
not?
Answer: Increased wages could solve a portion of the shortage problem because most individuals look for a healthy salary when searching for work. Although, depending on the demands of the job, even a higher wage may not entice those individuals. We must look at what those exact requirements are for these positions, and what sacrifices an individual would have to make to meet these demands, or even go above and beyond them. Coal mining is one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet. A particular need for any one of these workers, even the electricians, would be that they are putting their lives on the line each day. These high-risk positions are needed in order to provide resources needed for our societies to run fluidly. As for vehicle technicians, these individuals would be sacrificing their own time. Due to the fact they are required at all hours of the day, when truck drivers break down in the middle of the night, or in very remote places throughout the country during their delivery trips. If the price is right, most individuals will agree that the higher wage is worth the trouble of the job, which in the end, would help to decrease the shortage of workers.
