Emily Dickinson Hope
Hope is something positive., It is when you want something to happen, or a feeling of trust. It is almost like a wish since you have a goal or a plan. Thankfully Emily Dickinson has created a poem called hope which is about hope. Hope has saved so many people, and yet lives in dangerous areas like a storm. Emily Dickinson's poem “Hope” shows the theme “There can be hope in any situation”, through the use of similes, symbolism, and imagery.

First, similes is a good way to compare and express one thing to another, usually making it more descriptive and vivid. As the poem states “Hope is a thing with feathers, / That perches the soul, / and sings the tune-without the words,”(1-4). Emily Dickinson clearly states in her poem that it is describing some kind of bird. It is most likely a songbird as it sings a tune. It matches the theme as there areis always birds around the world, giving it gives our the planet more life to it with these avians flying around, perching on trees, and singing.

In "Hope is the thing with feathers", hope is heard in troubled times and warms the soul, but isn't always rational. The poem says of hope, "That [it] perches in the soul" (2). Hope is described as constant, and as an irrefutable part of us. Hope is also, "sweetest-in the Gale" (5). People can have hope anytime, anywhere. Hope is welcome when all else has failed. However pleasing hope is, it, "sings the tune without the words" (3). Hope sounds nice, and promises much, but there are no words to back up the tune, and is mostly something to keep one going, not something that will ever amount to anything.…

Hope-an illusion. Hope-something to be seen but never achieved. Hope-something to look forward to, never a reality. Reality comes from action, not wishes. Hope-a thing with feathers, flighty, beautiful, unreal. In both "Hope is the thing with feathers", by Emily Dickinson, and Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, hope is portrayed as keeping up one's spirit, and welcome when times are grueling, and sounding promising but not always making sense. Curley's wife dreams of being a movie star, and this keeps her married, if unhappily, to Curley, but her dream is actually a delusion, and while promising much, never actually delivers. George and Lennie are sustained throughout their troubles by their dream of a farm and escape from the migrant worker's life, and while it could have happened, Lennie kills Curley's wife, thus making their dream impossible. The poem describes hope as a tangible thing that is constant in the soul, and attracts people to it, but isn't based on reason.…

    Changing identity

Our identities are always subject to change as it is strongly linked to our ever- changing surroundings. This concept of identity is reinforced in The Death of the Bird by A.D Hope through the shift in the mood of the poem. The poet’s diction as he depicts the migrating journey of the bird as it travels through the ‘warm passage to the cooling station’ and is ‘sure and safely guided by ‘love’ emphasises the bird’s strong emotional ties to the place where it belongs creating safe and comfortable mood. However, as the poem progresses the bird gets ‘uncertain of her place’ and is portrayed as a ‘vanishing speck in those inane dominions creating the strong visual imagery of a tiny, delicate bird juxtaposed to the harsh condition of its unfamiliar environment emphasising the bird’s vulnerability. The contrast created by this dramatic shift in mood exemplifies how identity is a result of the place you connect to but is susceptible to change once that connection is lost.…

The use of figurative language is used to stress that the dark in one’s life will be balanced by light. One form of figurative language used in A Light exists in Spring is personification. Light, the main subject of the poem, is personified as a sentient being. “A Light exists in Spring/Not present on the Year” (1-2). This quote means that Light is not a constant stream in one's life. It will inevitably be balanced by dark. One should not worry when they encounter a hardship in life, for there will always be someone or something to guide them out of their situation. They must realize that spring, which is symbolic for relief and comfort, is not year-round and the world will enter a cold winter, which is symbolic for hardships and troubles. The hidden meanings of the seasons is not the only symbolism within A Light exists in Spring. Light itself is symbolic for Hope. In the second stanza of Dickinson’s poem, a line introduces the sense of happiness in humans, when they feel hope. “That Science cannot overtake/But Human Nature feels” (7-8). This quote explains that there will never be a real explanation as to why humans feel hope in the most dire of situations. It is just accepted that faith and hope will guide someone through the dark times of their life. People who search for hope will never truly find it. In order to discover the emotion, one must let it come to them. Hope will seek out whoever needs an unexplainable force to help them through any…

The meaning of hope or even false hope, is a good thing to us humans to feel, it helps us get through rough times, and pushes us move forward. Hope can be explained in hundreds different ways, some may say it’s a good thing to have in your soul, but others might say it’s not good, it could lead you to something bad. Emily Dickinson the author of both poems “Hope is a thing with feathers” mentions hope being a good thing to have in your soul, but “Hope is a subtle glutton” talks about hope being a glutton, meaning greedy eater. Dickinson’s poems somehow connects with Cormac McCarthy the author of the novel “The Road” that’s about a father and his son who have little hope that they would live another day. Hope can be explained a good or bad thing, but if you just a small amount of hope, you pushes yourself in a good direction, and you’ll make it through rough times.…
