Often we are faced with situations both in professional and personal life, where our actions and decision we make are detrimental to us or to others and in making such decisions we may tend to look at the benefit of ours or of somebody closely associated with us, thus depriving of others their right. Other issues such as insensitivity in making decisions, arrogance, volatility and rigidity in accepting change, all may affect our career and our decision making capabilities. Having a good understanding of emotional intelligence (EI) or emotional Quotient (EQ) will aid you in being a better communicator and enhance interactions with others (Barrett, 2014). Leaders have discovered how to create and deliver a powerful message by identifying the obstacles that interfere with the exchange of information, utilizing both verbal and nonverbal techniques, which help you to communicate with clarity, precision and style. Part of communication is having a trustworthy personality which contributes toward influencing your audience with your intended message and helps to maintain a positive ethos. While it is very easy to communicate it is not so easy to communicate effectively. The self-assessment reiterated what I already knew, leaders should continue to have awareness around effectively communicating and can do this by having a communication strategy and by creating a development plan that would aid continuing to strengthen core capabilities and specific skills to continue to be an effective communicator. The self-assessment helped me to identify those specific skills such as improving on positive ethos and working to develop targeted message for my external stakeholder. By creating a development plan with actionable steps and deadlines, and having awareness around EQ, maintaining positive ethos, and knowing my audience, I feel I can enhance not only my communication with my external stakeholders, but my overall communications.
