In this essay the author, Becky Birtha discusses the struggles and hard ships that many gay couples face when they try to adopt children. The big question discussed in this essay was, should same-sex couples have the same right as heterosexual couples when it comes to adopting children. Throughout the essay Birtha points out key facts that disrupt the thought that same-sex couple’s children are more likely to turn out homosexual themselves. She dishevels this by pointing out a study done that shows children of a heterosexual couple is more aggressive and negative when compared to those of a homosexual couple. She ends the essay by pointing out that there are roughly 134,000 children in foster-care in the United States waiting to be adopted. On her final note she applauds the AAP for recognizing that children should grow up with parents that can love and care for them regardless of their sexual orientation.…
Sara Yoest Pederson wrote an article titled “The Family of a Different Feather”. The article deals with the touchy issue of same-sex parents and how to explain that some children have two moms or two dads instead of one of each. Children are curious about things like this but their curiosity does not always last very long. Sara Pederson used a well written children’s book to explain this to her child and suggests that parents do the same. Pederson goes on to say in the article that our society has judged some children’s books as “most challenged and inappropriate material for its age group”. Some of this is based on the “forbidden” same-sex parenting.…

Censorship is a prominent issue that needs to be addressed by people evaluating the reasons books are being banned, the legalities of censorship, the problems and the effects of censorship if it is allowed. Imagine that boy again, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as he discovers is banned from their shelves. The boy misses out because this is a book he chose to read for fun, it displays an accurate representation of the time, and there are many lessons he could have learned from it. On a final note, Lopez concludes, “Maybe these people should open up a book and enlighten themselves and realize that they are part of a cycle that perpetuates intolerance, inequality and violence. We would not be a functioning and progressive society without books that offer a different view of the world, that allow the reader to be part of the story and experience through imagery and diction a different setting than one's…

“Provide the titles, authors, publishers, copyright dates, and a short summary of ten age-appropriate children’s books that you use to support development of children’s self-concept and self-esteem, and to help children deal with life’s challenges. These books may support development of cultural and linguistic group identity; gender identity; children with disabilities or special needs; separation, divorce, remarriage, or blended families; everyday activities and routines; and/or the cycle of life from human reproduction to death.”…
The author also appeals to pathos by discussing the effects a same sex marriage would have on a child if they were brought up in that kind of household. By doing this she hopes to tug on her readers’ emotions and make them feel sympathetic towards the children brought up in this environment. She talks about the differences between a child brought up in a house with a mother and father, and one brought up in a house with same sex parents. By doing this she effectively establishes credibility as a writer by stating facts and statistics to support her point. This makes her argument more valid, as opposed to just writing about her opinion alone.…
b. Children need the benefit of having a mother and a father in their lives not just two mothers or two fathers. Having two parents of different genders give influence to children’s lives that they could not get in a home of homosexual parents.…
The second main point I'll be discussing is the young person growing up in a family with a singe father or mother. There are some things a mother can and cannot teach to her son or dauther and a father vise verse. That young person can even get bullied because he or she doesn't have the right gender parent during a school event. That young…
As human beings we are all entitled to our rights to have a family. Society’s image of a perfect heterosexual family is just a stereotype. Nowadays kids today do not live with two married parents. The sexual identity of a child with gay parents develops the same way with heterosexual parents. Most gay or lesbian children are born into a heterosexual family. Children are more impacted by the communication with their parents rather than the sexual identity of their parents. Even living in a homosexual household children adapt quite well with their peers. Growing up with two homosexual parents the child tend to believe in equal rights and is sympathy towards differences. Gay parents are not accidental parents so they are much more devoted and inclined versus heterosexual parents who became accidental parents. ”It has be stated that children can be successfully raised by same-sex couple with no adverse effects that would not have been present if raised by parents of the opposite sex.” (LGBT Adoption Statistics) Traditionally family beliefs are not adequate proof for…
During early childhood, ages two to five years old, Carroll explains that “Although this period of childhood is not particularly active in terms of sexual development, children may learn more in their first few years of childhood about the nature of their bodies than they learn the entire remainder of their lives.” (Carroll, J. L. 2013 pg. 182). At this age children start asking about the difference in male and female genitalia. They also start to understand the difference between boys and girls. Children tend to model their parents or peers during this stage in their development. Children begin to interact with other children exploring their sexuality. Kissing, hugging and fondling are common…
The thing I learned from this article is that children’s books are very influential in a child mind and t young age. Children are like sponges the information that is given. Singer (2011) state in her article” That old fashion notions that an author simply imparts, by writing words on paper, ideas and information to a porous reader has been replaced with an argument about implied reader who does not absorb a text so much as work to understand (Pg5) From this as we discussed in one of our discussion about mass media and how it have a influence on children perception on women being sexual icons. I look at this like as parents are involved where they can explain what is right or wrong.…
Psychologists say that sexuality is determined in the early stages of childhood but is not a conscious decision. Basically, people are born with their sexuality. That being said, many parents assume there might be something off about their child if they show interest in activities meant for the opposite sex. If their little girl doesn’t like to dress up and would rather play in the dirt, parents start to get suspicious. If their little boy likes dolls and is not all that interested in going outside or playing video games, parents think there’s a possibility of them being gay. But a very important thing to understand about sexuality is that there is no way to tell what sexuality someone is just by how masculine or feminine they are. That is because, like afore mentioned, gender is a spectrum. There are gay men that are very masculine but then some that are also extremely feminine. There are lesbians that seem like straight girls to others because they aren’t as masculine as the stereotypical lesbian. This applies to other…
It is a book of our times, and yet a period piece that pre-dates some of the more stringent child-abuse laws. The children tend the parents as well as themselves, and rise above their circumstances. Resilience, courage and society’s assumptions are addressed.…
When analyzing the topic Sexual Identity I investigated that the majority of people were against schools teaching sexual identity however, some don’t. I’ve always believed that a couple is based on a man and a women. Although I should know better by now I cannot help to think that children are going to be taught sexual identities at a very young age. At the same time schools have a very strong point, because they feel like children don’t know how they feel about themselves, and they should know, so if they feel that they don’t belong in their body. As of right now a lot of children are growing up with different thoughts from the ones I had. Schools shouldn’t be teaching sexual identities because I believe it doesn’t correspond to them. Parents should be the ones talking to their children’s when they think it’s convenient. We also should know that theirs parents that don’t communicate with their children or…
