Case Study Unit: Encouraging Appropriate Behavior

Abstract: This paper will address the best plan to encourage the appropriate behavior of two 5th grade students, Zach and Patrick. Zach and Patrick are two very different students, with varying strengths, weaknesses and interests. The problem however, is that these two students appear to have a problem with one another as they are the center of various classroom distractions. The plan for each student will be designed specifically for that student in hopes that the distractions will stop. The two behavioral goals that will help Zach get along with Patrick are as follows. The first goal is that Patrick will show respect for himself and others by calling them only by their names and giving encouraging comments. Secondly, Patrick will raise his hand when he desires to speak in class and will only speak on the class discussion at hand. Contingent instructions and specific praise will be the strategies used to help Patrick reach these goals. Contingent instructions will be very helpful because, “Contingent instructions serve as a “coupling request,” addressing both the inappropriate and desired behaviors” (Evertson & Poole). When Patrick is displaying inappropriate or unwanted behavior the teacher can address that behavior and then redirect Patrick to display the behavior that is desired. “Specific praise includes verbal or written statements to a student that recognize a desired or correct behavior. Praise can function as a tool for instruction and for increasing social and academic behaviors” (Evertson & Poole). When students are praised for displaying desired behavior, they are more likely to continue that behavior because just as adults enjoy praise children do as
