In the story Lord of the Flies, the theme, no one man should have all power, is conveyed. This theme can relate to modern day life all over the world. For example, the state of North Korea is terrible. The entire country is ruled by one man, Kim Jong il. It is a dictatorship, and life for everyone there is abominable. In the book Lord of the Flies life is similar. Ralph began as the dictator, having Jack as his main helper, but soon Jack revolted and tried to overthrow the chief. This is shown several times throughout the novel when Ralph and Jack, the main characters, fight over who should be chief, and argue about the biggest priorities, like keeping the fire going. The boys on the island become indecisive over who should be the ultimate ruler of the tribe, and if he should join him. Towards the end of the narrative, Ralph can be known as the only rational boy left on the island.…

When I walked into the movie theater, there were a good amount of people that came to see it. They all seemed to have a feeling of anticipation for this movie adaptation of the novel. I bet that most of the people that were in the theater the night that I went to watch it all read the book about, so they know what they are getting into and the book has been out for a while so needed to have established some sense of familiarity with the movie. I noticed a group of people that were commenting on how it would be a spectacular movie adaptation is going to be, they were in for a special treat. I went to see this movie with my girlfriend, since she is an action movie sci-fi buff, she was very respectful and let me analyze and critique this movie for this essay. I went to Gateway during the middle of the week on a day I didn’t have homework, I made it into a date night. It wasn’t opening night, since I didn’t realize this movie was assigned until later in the week. The mood of the crowd was full of anticipation and then regret at the end of the movie. I fitted in with the crowd since I knew the plot behind this movie. I was comfortable with the whole production since I was ready for whatever this movie was going to throw at me.…

“Because never in my entire childhood did I feel like a child. I felt like a person all along—the same person that I am today.” (Card xvii) In Orson Scott Card’s novel, Ender’s Game, Ender Wiggin, a little 6 year old boy, is recruited into Battle School by Colonel Graff and the International Fleet to save mankind from an alien species called the Buggers. The Buggers have been humankind’s main enemy and they know very little of the Buggers beside that they are the bad guy. There has already been two fights between human’s and buggers. During both encounters, the humans barely survived, and they now must prepare for the third fight. Ender’s Game is a journey of little Ender Wiggin, who was always being bullied for being a “third”, and how everything changed when he got recruited at the age of six to train in order save the world. Although the children in this book are trained and built to be saviors of Earth, on the other hand are treated as children and kept in the dark.…

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hossenini deals primarily with the theme of guilt and redemption and subtly approaches the correlations between religion and violence through these main themes. The novel centers on the relationship between the narrator Amir and his friend/servant Hassan and Amir’s guilt when he witnesses an act of violence done to Hassan that he fails to intervene in. This personal conflict ties into the narrator’s experiences with religion as he attempts to redeem himself. Through this aspect of the novel, we can see the personal journey of finding the true Self through traumatic experience and the dichotomy of religion as a tool to explain suffering and violence as well as a justification for violence.…

Throughout time society as a whole has greatly changed and developed to what it is now. One major part of the society is the social class structure. In Charles Dickens’ novel, Great Expectations, Dickens expresses his beliefs on that structure in many ways. Since Dickens wrote the novel during the Victorian Era it reflects and evaluates the beliefs and values of the time. For the most part ones place in the social order was based on wealth and the reputation of ones relations. In general, the member of the higher class were unhappy and those in the lower class were joyful. He does this to show that wealth isn’t everything. He continues to display that idea throughout the book and he displays its effects on various aspects of life. Dickens uses the motif of hands, which defines certain characteristics of people, to represent the effects of social class on the lives of many throughout the book because he holds a negative view on the social class system.…

Willa Cather once said, “The end is nothing; the road is all.” But what does that mean? The most overt answer is that it doesn't matter where one ends up in life, it's how one gets there that counts. But, I think it goes deeper than that. To me, this means that the path you take is, in itself, simultaneously the beginning, middle, and end, and ultimately I agree with Cather, that the path is the focus not the end.…
