Energy Story
Electricity is a complex branch of physics that plays an immensely important role in our lives. In both the articles Energy Story by the California Energy Commission and Conducting Solutions by Rodney Schreiner we are given a fairly in-depth explanation to this fascinating tool. In a 2011 TED talk a speaker named AnnMarie Thomas introduces us to an intriguing concept, using playdough to conduct electrical experiments. All of these sources purposes are to help us better understand electricity.

Energy Story” starts by introducing us to the basis of everything, atoms, and their structure,. The article then walks us through the many components of electricity, and the use of it. “Electrons spin around the center, or nucleus, of atoms, in the same way the moon spins around the earth” The author of this article uses comparisons and similes to help us better grasp some of the concepts, making the article feel like it’s being aimed towards a younger audience. The purpose is help the reader, likely a child or young adult, understand electricity and its many uses.

She explains that with two different play dough recipes, one with sugar and one with salt, (because the salt playdough conducts electricity and the sugar playdough is 150 times more resistant to electric currents than the salt dough) together they are a circuit. “when you put them together, you have circuits; circuits that the most creative, tiny hands can build on their own” She talks about using these methods to teach children specifically, similar to that of the first article. This source presents an easy way for children to learn about electricity, specifically,

In the Energy Story, the author tells us that we use a lot of energy and in a lot of different things. They tell us how the structure of the atom looks and how the number of protons, electrons, and neutrons affect how much energy that element can produce. If there are more electrons the element does not conduct any energy and if there are more…

A 2kilogram block is released from rest at the top of a curved incline in the shape of a quarter of a circle of radius R. The block then slides onto a horizontal plane where it finally comes to rest 8 meters from the beginning of the plane. The curved incline is frictionless, but there is an 8newton force of friction on the block while it slides horizontally. Assume g = 10 meters per second2.…

Summary Sometimes we inadvertently make choices that change our lives and possibly history. Such was the case when William Kamkwamba, an inquisitive boy from Malawi, took apart a broken radio to discover how it worked. From that moment he was hooked on figuring out electricity, how it functioned and what it could do. Scouring dump yards for parts to repair radios and cell phones became his favorite hobby. He would go to the small public library and check out books on electricity and would read and reread those pages until he understood more than his teachers.…

    The Working of Wires

INTRODUCTION Electricity is usually invisible. Except for lightning and sparks, you never see it in daily life. However, light bulbs and a magnetic compass can show you when something electrical is happening. By observing their behavior and making a few assumptions, you can begin forming ideas about electricity. This type of thinking is called “building a model”. INVESTIGATION ONE: WHAT IS NEEDED TO LIGHT A BULB? 1.1 Activity: Lighting bulbs in a loop Insert three D-cells into the battery holder (as in Figure 1.1), and insert two ROUND bulbs (not long bulbs) into a pair of sockets. Use three wires to connect the sockets to each other and to the two “terminals” of the battery holder: 1) the spring inside the case near the red spot, and 2) the metal post on the outside of the case near the blue spot. The bulbs should light and be of similar brightness. The battery, bulbs and wires now form a “closed loop”.…

In the articles Energy Story, “Conducting solutions”, and in the video Hands-On Science with Squishy Circuits there are similarities and differences. One thing I noticed was that in the video it used a model of how to make your own circuit board using playdough. In Energy Story there is a picture of an atom and there is more information about negative and positive charges. In “Conducting Solutions” it just explains some different solutions, there were no pictures at…

Every day people use electricity. We use it to power our phone, and televisions. We use electricity to get ourselves to where we need to be, but people don’t just use electricity to power the vain things in life. Some people can’t even see or hear without it. To some having electricity is the difference between life and death. Without electricity we wouldn’t have nearly as many medical advances as we do today all the people that rely on electric devices at hospitals would probably be dead.…

Introduction Although the use of electricity dates back to Benjamin Franklin’s days, it was not practical for use in the home until one person changed the way science thinks about it- Nikola Tesla. Nikola Tesla’s childhood, greatest inventions, and position as the electrician for the World’s Fair all shaped how he revolutionized the use of electricity and brought it to everyone in America. Childhood and Personal Life Born in a farm house on July 9, 1856 in Smijlan, Croatia to happy parents Djouka and Mijulin, Nikola Tesla was the fourth child. Nikola Tesla proved to be inventive, just like his mother. Although Nikola’s mother had little formal education, she was extraordinarily intelligent. She invented several tools to make household life easy, including things like egg beaters, looms, and butter churns. Tesla’s father was a priest. Young Tesla was extremely motivated by pride. Fights with friends or envy of their possessions lead him to inventing new better things. One time, he got in an argument with his friends and they excluded him from their fishing trip. In a fury, Tesla made his own fishing hook and went out to capture some fish himself. Because he did not own fishing bait, he decided to make the hook shiny so that the frogs would be interested. His idea worked, and he ended up coming home with about two dozen frogs when his friends came home with nothing. (Aldrich 13) Because Nikola Tesla’s hobbies seemed strange to his peers, Nikola Tesla did not have many friends and often isolated himself from others his age. This caused him to spend even more time on his inventions. One of his best childhood inventions was an insect powered propeller. It…
