English 101 Personal Reflection
The papers I have chosen demonstrate my best work from English 101. The papers are an example of how I have grown as a writer throughout the semester. The portfolio contains the required “response to an argument” paper and the “analysis of a person’s SNS” paper. These papers show my improvement in structure and in clarity. I learned how to correctly make a paper flow in such a way that makes sense and makes a strong argument. I also learned how to make my sentences and paragraphs easier to understand.

In our classes’ third essay, we had to respond to an argument. I responded to a claim made by Colleen Gillard, a writer for The Atlantic. Her claim was that the British wrote better children’s stories. I disagreed with her claim and provided

I believe this is because I understood how to structure my paper correctly. Through the paper, I made sure that the way my argument flowed made sense. I understand now that for an argumentative paper to make sense, summaries must be unbiased. I also understand now that introductions must not only explain the debate and my own reasons for disagreement or support, but must also have credentials to the author who made the initial claim and briefly state the author’s support. I was also able to make response paragraphs that had strong evidence. I gathered this evidence form critically reading the authors article, another skill I improved throughout the semester.

For my other paper in the portfolio, I choose to include the “analyzing a person’s SNS” paper. I wrote about a childhood friend who uses twitter frequently. I choose to write about him because I there are things I know about him that maybe those who follow him may not. I wrote about how he uses the social media site “Twitter” to vent his feelings and truly only writes to portray a tough exterior to those who may not know him well. I focus on the fact that he could use it to describe how he has overcome certain aspects of his life others may not

Writing three different types of papers helped me to improve my Rhetorical Knowledge. In my past I have written many research papers, however, I have little experience writing personal narratives or rhetorical analysis papers. This class gave me the opportunity to practice both forms of writing. I feel more confident writing a personal narrative or rhetorical analysis than I previously did. I also understand different rhetorical situations, which is critical in developing a strong paper.…

After a year of focused work in English 250, I feel that I have developed the skill to articulate what I want to convey to the reader in multiple ways. My strengths as a reader have also definitely improved after reading the material we had this semester. We discussed several different aspects of the English language and spent a good amount of time this semester perfecting our ability to write rhetorical analyses. Doing so allowed us to focus a lot of our time on the WOVE method of communication and become better communicators.…

When I first read question five and decided that this is the topic I wanted to write about for this particular essay, it made me think about all the different movies I have seen where the main character tragically dies but remains in the in between because they have a certain task they must complete before they can truly be gone and go to heaven. I’ve always found these kinds of movies interesting so I decided I would write my own story. Here it goes!…

When it comes to writing papers, I usually have a difficult time getting started. I sometimes have trouble with certain topics, getting the general concept, and then turning it into a writing that will get my point across. I feel as if I’m not very creative with my words as I should be without sounding so scattered brained and lost. I was a little nervous when entering English 1102, after having such a difficult time in English 1101 online. At first I did feel at ease but once we got to doing research on a particular food and the articles, I did have some challenging moments. In in the end I did pull my works together and I plan on sharing some of my reflections while taking a look back on a couple of my papers.…

Over the course of this year in English, I think my writing process has excelled the most along with my overall writing. In the past, I have used similar techniques to develop a final essay, but, this year, I have begin to rely more heavily on planning out and slowly chipping away at my essays and papers. I believe also that because of this planning the strength of my writing as a whole has grown. Personally, I do not think that I grew in my vocabulary usage. Overall this year, I grew as a writer in ways that I would not have predicted.…

To start off with, the overall environment of being part of an AP/IB English class all throughout high school has made a positive affect on me. This has not only affected my familiarization with college level essays but I know what is expected from a higher level english course. As I have mentioned in my previous essay, I have written papers that were up to seventeen pages long. When I was in high school I often thought, why do I have to write so much, it would annoy me that every month was a new essay, now the idea of writing a lengthy paper has…

As I began English 111 this summer I thought I was a good writer unfortunately. I was not skilled in writing like I expected. As I progressed in in this course it has become evident to me I lacked the proper structure when formulating an essay. I essentially saw that I was going to need a lot of improvement when devising a good thesis statement and fixing grammatic errors. I also had to refrain from using sentence fragments to improve the flow of my writing. Despite, all the obstacles, I have developed the skills needed to formulate an essay. However, this course has given me the knowledge needed to succeed in writing many well-structured papers.…

The skills I had developed up until this point further evolved in the AP (Advanced Placement) English class I attended during my senior year. AP English was the most challenging literature class I took during my time in high school; it was also the most enjoyable and rewarding. We read literary works such as “The Poisonwood Bible” by Barbara Kingsolver; “The Invisible Man” by Ralph Waldo Emerson; “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley; “The Things They Carried” by ???; and “A Doll’s House” by Henrik Ibsen. Although the reading load was rather intense, I especially enjoyed applying the critical analysis skills I had developed up to this point to these novels. It is difficult to establish which book was my favorite to read and interpret; I found each to be eloquently written and representative of realistic life situations, both contemporary and historical.…

A thorough analysis of my experience in Writing 101 taught me many things. A major takeaway from this class is never to overestimate my abilities. While taking this course, I was also trying to handle two other classes, a full-time job, and a hormonal teenager. I feel I personally overestimated my abilities. Prior to taking this course I did not have a strong background in writing or English for that matter. I honestly feel writing is my weakest subject. I know I will have to retake this course. When I do retake the class, I will undoubtedly ensure I do not have any other distractions. I must take this course as a stand-alone class. I also will make certain this be a face to face course. I feel the lessons in this course are exquisite. However, I should have asked for help sooner. I now…
