ENG 3U You 're not born prejudiced; you 're taught it”(Swindoll). Prejudice is the attitude and opinion held by one person or group about another. Any unequal or different treatment directed toward another group is considered discrimination. Often we are quick to make a firm judgement about someone before even knowing them. Parents often pass down prejudice to thier children which shelters children from having their own opinion. Pressure to accomidate to views of families, friends and associates and not forming your own opinion, is one of many reasons that people are prejudiced. We act a certain way towards a group of people to fit in with the people that we like; prejudiced is a learned trait. Forming an opinion or judging someone before you know them, solely on the way they look, is one of the main forms of prejudice. There is a constant thrive from people as they are growing up to look a certain way, but "beautiful" is just an opinion. Some children, mostly girls, when they are young play with Barbies and they form the opinion that having blue eyes, blonde hair, being tall and skinny is "beautiful". This also forms prejudice in young kids that you have to be tall and blonde to be beautiful. Miss America 2014 winner, Nina Davulur, was the first Indian American to win Miss America. Her victory forces society to reevaluate what their definition of beautiful really is; Davulur is far from blonde hair, blue eyes, yet she still won Miss America. People showed descrimination toward Davular imediately following her win as Miss America 2014 on many social networking sites saying things like “The Arab,” “This is American not India,” and other comments with ties to al-Qaeda (Oldenburg).
