Laura janssen In Roald Dahl's story “Lamb to the Slaughter” I feel sympathy for the main character Mary Maloney. I think that this story is written in such a way that the reader is lead to feel sympathetic towards Mary. One of the ways that Roald Dahl creates sympathy for mary is by writing the story in her point of view. this makes it easy for the reader to understand where her actions are coming from. Roald dahl also described
Mary in such a peaceful way in the beginning of the story. One example of this is when he says “There was a slow smiling air about her, and about everything she did.” This sentence portraits mary as an innocent woman. Roald Dahl also creates sympathy for the character by making her 6 months pregnant. This is showing that mary is a mother figure and supposedly not selfish. near the end when Mary murders her husband the reader starts to think about mary's personality and if she is guilty or not. I think that people would forgive mary because she because she got this bad news in such a terrible way. Many people might also think that this was just a reaction mary had because of the bad news and the baby. September 22, 2014

Laura Janssen In this story, setting and symbolism are closely related. What might the “safe beach” and “wild bay” represent? In the story “through the tunnel” Doris Lessing uses the “safe beach” and the the “wild bay” to create meaning. Doris Lessing clearly contrasts the “safe beach” and the the
“wild bay”. I think that this is to show the reader more about Jerry, an 11 year old boy.
Since Jerry has no dad I think that Jerry has always stayed on the safe side. Now that
Jerry is in this age I think that he wants to experiment and that he wants to accomplish something. Jerry has also never had anybody to make a man out of him. This is also another reason why Jerry might want to do something dangerous and try something new. Doris Lessing’s great use
