Jennifer Estrella “In this world goodness is destined to be defeated.” by Walker Percy. In my opinion, this quote means that no matter what, goodness will be overshadowed and/or destroyed by a greater evil, for a lack of better words. I agree with this quote, because there are many real life situations that can prove it, along with the situations portrayed in most literary works. Two pieces of literature I can relate to this quote would be “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, and “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller. Both these books relate to the quote for the fact that the main protagonists, or in this case, the goodness, both get killed because of the antagonists, in this case, the evil that will defeat them. “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, is a book I can relate to the quote “In this world goodness is destined to be defeated.” by Walker Percy, for a few reasons. The conflict in this book would be that Lennie, although he is the protagonist, kills Curley’s Wife. In my opinion, he did not do this to actually kill her. I see it as he did it because he did no know what he was doing, and because of this, the evil in the book, which was Curley, went after him, which caused George, Lennie’s best friend, to shoot him and save him from Curley. My point of view on this situation would be that the world in the 1920’s or so wasn’t ready for a mentally handicapped person. “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, is a book that I can relate to the quote “In this world goodness is destined to be defeated.” by Walker Percy, because of the conflict which is the fact that the goodness in the book was directly defeated by the evil. As in, the protagonist, John Proctor, was hanged because of a lie that the antagonist, Abigail Williams, spread about him (accusing him to be a witch.). My point of view on that subject would be the fact that no matter what John Proctor could’ve done, it would’ve been in vain, because either way, he would have been defeated for revealing that Abigail and…
