says that her family is very interesting, so he can not help himself. Jo says, if Laurie’s so interested, he can always stop by for a visit.
They continue talking and Jo tells Laurie about her work at her miserable Aunt’s. Laurie is intrigued about Jo, so they continue talking. Then, they start talking about books, and Laurie invites Jo into his grandfather’s library. Suddenly, the doctor comes to check up on Laurie, so he leaves Jo in the library. While observing, Jo comes across a picture of Mr. Laurence. She is speaking about her thoughts about him when Mr. Laurence comes in! Jo is surprised and embarrassed, but Mr. Laurence seems to like her. He invites Jo to stay for tea and desserts, and while doing so, he notices that Laurie seems very glad to have a friend over. Then, Laurie brings Jo to the conservatory, and Jo is astonished. He lets her take some of the flowers and them home. When they go back inside, Jo sees a grand piano and asks Laurie to play a piece for her. He does and Jo is very delighted. It upsets Mr. Laurence, however, and Laurie says he’ll tell Jo about it someday. When Jo goes home, she tells her family all about her visit. Her mom explains that Laurie’s father married a musician, and Mr. Laurence (Grandpa) disapproved and cut the family
off. Then, both of Laurie’s parents died and now, when Mr. Laurence hears the piano, he is very saddened because it reminds him of the woman who married his son and caused the family separation.
