Writing to Discover: Do you change the way you use language in different situations? Write about how your use of language changes and why?
Changing my spoken language seems to be an everyday occurrence for me in my job field of working with children. Many situations arise in my job that leaves me in situations in which I need to speak differently to different clients so they have a better understanding of what I am talking about. Many of the clients that I work with have been taught to speak improperly since the day they were born. They have been conditioned to mispronounce words and use horrible grammar. We have clients from all over the state and while they were all raised in different communities and situations, they have one thing in common, they all seem to have been neglected to be given the chance to speak properly. It is my job to help them succeed in the world and to me that starts with communication. I try to help them by teaching them the proper ways to say some words by spelling them out and repeating it back to them. It’s not easy for them to hear the difference in the sounds of the letters. So I just continue to correct them and try to recondition the way they speak. I, by no means, am a great speaker, great at pronunciation or even good at using proper grammar myself and catch myself speaking improperly at times. The kids are quick to correct me at these times and these are the times that I realize how much they really do pay attention. This is the rewarding part of the job.
Sometimes while talking to a client I think of how I use to be them when language is involved. I grew up in the inner city and for most of my childhood I spoke quickly and poorly. It wasn’t until I moved out of that environment that I noticed how ignorant I was to the spoken language. Every day is a learning experience as I try to improve my written and spoken language by reading, writing and speaking. Looking up words with the

English as a common ground is so that Americans can understand what is being spoken to each other. Americans should be able to communicate and read any material out in this country without wondering what is being said. Foreigners or non-English speaking citizens are increasingly becoming more segregated, creating poverty- stricken areas. The creation of these areas is due to the language barrier (US-English, 2012). Americans who speak English can find it insulting when other begins to speak to them in another language. Majority of the states have English as their official language. So when a foreigner begins to speak another language or attempt to communicate in English, it could be found offensive because if the same person were to go to their country, it would offensive if you did not speak their language. When living or visiting the United States, it would be safe to assume that everyone spoke English if it were the official language. No one would be insulted, nor would an individual find it hard to communicate with another. Making English the official language of the United States means that the government will be conducting everything solely in English. This includes all public documents, records, legislation and regulations, as well as hearings, official ceremonies and public meetings (US-English, 2012). “This means that everything will be conducted in the English language and that no one will have the right to demand government services in any other language” (ProEnglish, 1994). The government cost of multilingualism is in the hundreds of million dollars. Companies have to spend about 15 to 20 percent of production cost to use in translation services (CalRecycle, 1995). For example, Hospitals have to pay for translators to those who do not speak English. Translators in California are paid $45 to $50 an hour! While…

For the past four years, I have worked as a teaching assistant at the Child Development Center, a preschool on Berry College’s campus. This work experience has helped me become more competent working with people through my interactions with parents and teachers as well as through interactions with the preschoolers in my class. Working with very young children enhanced my ability to communicate because I have to find different ways to explain tasks in order to reach children at various levels of comprehension and ability. There were also some English language learning students from Asian and Eastern European backgrounds, and I had to learn quickly how to communicate with them in a way that would not make them feel isolated from the rest of the class. This struggle to communicate was highlighted just a few weeks ago when a new student from Russia joined our class. On his first day with us, I could not get him to move from his spot on the floor after naptime. I kept attempting to talk to him and to help the student roll up his cot, only to have him turn away every time I tried to speak with him. Needless to say, this was an extreme case of a child who spoke almost no English and who I later found common ground with after many failed attempts on my part to communicate. Working at the preschool has taught me that every individual has a unique set of skills and requires different things from the person assisting them, and when a strong foundation of communication has been…

I struggled with speech-language until high school. It was difficult to pronounce certain words, so instead of speaking my ideas or opinions, I would stay quite. The lack of proficiency in English-made me insecure to speak in front of the classroom. Many people believed I was a shy child, yet he/she did not know the real reason why I dislike participating. School children would tease each if he/she had a Mexican accent. That made me even more worried. The fact, that I saw my father continue to struggle with the English language it always resonated with me. My father would get frustrated when he could not pronounce certain words. My father would always take my siblings or me to doctor’s appointment, insurance companies, and banks to translate for him. It was difficult being a child not knowing what professionals were saying. They would use big words that I did not understand at the time. My father would get upset and tell me why I could not translate what he/she was…

When I was young growing up I was teased because I was told that I spoke “white”. Unfortunately in my case, I taught myself to speak the way everyone else spoke and I regret it to this day. At the time I felt if I spoke the same way everyone else did I would be accepted as everyone else. Now that I have reached a level where speaking incorrectly is not acceptable, I have to practice speaking. Rachel L. Jones and Amy Tan both made excellent points on different backgrounds having their own way to converse, but also being able to speak professionally.…

After reading Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue”, I realized how many different “Englishes” I have spoken or used, as well as how many I have heard in my life-particularly while in the military. For example, how I speak with authority figures versus friends, and how I speak with my daughter as opposed to “educated” adults.…

Whenever I'd be in class I would feel so lost because it’d take me a while to grasp exactly what was going on while the other students were ahead. This has affected my academic achievement in high school because it has challenged me to put in my efforts to achieve my goal, which has been to be accepted into the college I desire. Considering that it is required for students to pass four years of English, my path to succeeding that has been rough, but I’ve managed to work through it and give it my all. The language barrier has allowed me to think differently in the sense of being able to think in one language and say it in another. Unfortunately, that’s where my problem has been. Since I am bilingual, some times whenever I want to express or explain something it’s really hard for me to figure out how to put my thoughts into words and make it clear enough to where people understand me. Now referring back to my troubles in English class, I think that because it’s been tough for me to explain myself, it has played a part in the lack of strength in my writing. However, overtime I believe that because this has been such a challenging issue for me it has also been my motivation to keep on going even though it may seem too difficult at first. Reflecting upon myself, I can certainly say that I’ve improved my English comprehension and speech skills compared to my past…
