Obedience and its Dangers
There are many times you believe obeying elders or higher forms of authority is the right way to go. Us as Latin adolescents truly believe that our older family members of authority and/or the government are like “Greek Gods.” We have so much respect for them that most of the time they take advantage of our obedience and use it to their advantage. Latin parents as well as higher authority use obedience as some kind of power, proving they have control over the people they consider to be beneath them. Obedience has many different elements that could make it both dangerous and overwhelming. Primarily, the word power could be the perfect second meaning to the word obedience. When you receive obedience from kids or other people, you tend to believe that you have this control and influence over them as well. For example, my mom and dad are two people that I personally obey no matter what. Most of the time my parents feel like they have this power over me just because raised me, fed me as a child, and made me the man I am today. In a word I personally believe this fact is true, but sometimes things get out of hand and they abuse or take advantage of my obedience towards them. Obedience is a weapon used to define superiority in a parent’s perspective. Subsequently, our Latin culture takes obedience very seriously which in my opinion, is never good. A majority of Latinos use obedience as a sign of respect in regards to the culture. For example, in the Dominican Republic the government from mayor all the way to president, are very well respected and obeyed. The citizens pretty much do everything wants them to do. Dominicans personally believe that their obedience towards the government is one of the main reasons why the country is so corrupt, yet they still manage to obey them and follow their orders. It’s just the way the Latin society is which is why obedience can be harmful. In
