English a Medium of Instruction
English a Medium of Instruction
A question we are still grappling with in Pakistan after 60 years is, what should be the language of instruction in our schools?
In Dhaka Quid-e-azam said “let me make it very clear to you that the state language of Pakistan is going to be Urdu and no other language. Anyone who tries to mislead you is really the enemy of Pakistan. Without one state language, no nation can remain tied up solidly together and function. Look at the history of other countries. Therefore, so far as the state language is concerned, Pakistan's shall be Urdu. (Jinnah 1948 : 89).”
The purpose of my essay is to explore the important issue which Pakistanface since it independence in 1947. Education plays a vital role in the development of nations and society. Education promotes the social and economic life of the nation. Education is the back bone of any nation who wants to be a model country in the today world. For this purpose good education is very necessary and for good education a society or nation need a good medium of instruction. Which could help a teacher to achieve his goal and nourish the minds of the children and prepare them for the society and transform them in to a better citizen. According to the experts the best medium of instruction is the mother tongue of the students. Use of the second language will effect their learning ability and they will left behind those who are learning in their mother tongue, According to Prof Mujib of Jamia Millia (Delhi), when a child is learning in a second language he translate a world in 17 seconds from foreign language to his mother tongue and then again 17 seconds to retranslate to the forgin language in other words. So imagine how much time he is wasting instead of direct approach.
The question is still there, why after 60 we could not adopt one language as medium of instruction in our country, although we have selected Urdu as our official language from the very beginning. Without one state language,

I agreed the author reason. In my own opinion, nowadays, there is really lack of teachers in school. If government really conducts bilingual education, the teachers in school may feel stress where they need to teach same subject in two different languages. So that, government should be provide training to teacher who teach two languages in the same subject. The teachers also may have the problem in teaching the student. The teachers may have to spend more time to explain to the student and communicate with…

Language education is one of the primary educations in human’s early learning. A good mind is build by a good language structure, so bilingualism is the important thing that should be emphasized in human’s life. However, to apply bilingualism in education, people need to spend more money because it is more expensive than regular education system. When a sub-ordinate nation is ruled by a more dominant nation, the dominant nation passes on most of its cultural traits, most notably language, onto the sub-ordinate nation through power. This transfer of one culture onto another, is what we call, cultural imperialism. The language that is believed to be the dominant language today is the ‘English’ language, which obviously comes from the western culture. In today’s world you see English spoken almost everywhere, in India its even the co-official language along with hindi, the status of the English language as international language is well recognized and seems to be spreading fast, even in places such as Nigeria where English medium schools are growing in number. Robert Phillipson, a well known scholar of applied linguistics, in his book, ‘Linguistic Imperialism’ (1992), discussed how organizations such as the British Council, IMF (International Monetary Fund) and World Bank, have promoted the English language. They regard the English language as extremely well established and as ‘a gateway to the world’. With the increasing dominance of the English language the entire western culture too, takes up an imperialistic form. Especially in developing nations such as ours, where to an extent we really do rely on already developed nations such as Britain, for our prosperity. Now coming to Pakistan, as I discussed earlier that through power or authority English language has spread, and this authority usually lies with colonizers, in our case, Britain. We’re aware of the fact that in the 1800s Pakistan was a part of United India, and the rulers were the English. During that time English had become an important language to learn for the purpose of attaining influential posts, and unfortunately the Muslims of that were vastly uneducated and unable to attain the high ranks, even though there were efforts by the Great Sir Syed Ahmed Khan to urge the Muslims to learn English, the Muslims continued to be discriminated against.…

Kumikh should be selected as the national language as it fulfils the four functions of a national language better than the other five languages. The Kumikh people make up thirty percent of the entire Bazakhstan population, which makes them the second largest population in the nation. The language of a majority group should be selected as the national language because more people can identify with it. Furthermore, The Kumikh people are generally well liked by the other ethno groups. Because of the good relationship that the Kumikh has with the other groups, the selection of the Kumikh language is not likely to upset the rest of the groups. Taking an example from another country, Indonesia took similar steps in selecting Malay as their national language. The government of Indonesia chose Malay, as it was easy to learn and did not upset any particular ethnic group. Their strategy in the selection process has brought them success, and it should bring Bazakhstan success as well. The national language should be highly symbolic and representative of a nation. The use of the language…

In Philippines, English language has been used and taught in schools, workplaces and home. Filipinos are known to be fluent and effective English speakers.Early exposure with the English language is also a good head start for the children, if their parents and caregivers would speak and teach English to them, they can have an early preparation for school. It is good that schools are very strict with the implementation of English language as medium of teaching subjects. There are debates about the language that must be used to teach subjects in schools, imagine teaching Science and Technology in the Filipino? Isn’t it hard for the student to understand and absorb the lesson in that way? In this way, English language should be taught in the appropriate subjects for more effective delivery of the lessons. As English as taught to be the universal language, it is also good that schools try to enhance and practice the students more in the English language, in these ways they also prepare and expose the students in the battlefield of employment. The schools fully gear-up the students to answer competently in entrance examinations and job interviews. Having a country with huge percentage of call center companies with almost 400,000 Filipino employed in the industry, it is not surprising that foreigners would invest in the country because they view how good and competent in the English language Filipinos are. Koreans, Chinese and Japanese are also choosing to study in the…

Here comes the notion of what is worth teaching. There are different aspects of looking at the worthiness of the content to be taught. One is from the view of learners and other is from the intrinsic value of what is ought to be taught. We cannot let slip the fact that the process of education involves a huge number of students and not just one child. And the framing of curriculum and teaching methods according to each child is beyond the bounds of possibility. So, the teaching methods are created based on generalized child psychology and adults are required to perceive things from child’s point of view. Though, it has its own limitations also. Generally, children receive and understand knowledge that has been presented in engaging and fascinating manner. Also, the biggest concern is at a very tender age children are unaware and have very little knowledge to be able to choose what should be taught or not. Another facet of what is worth teaching is the knowing the content in terms of intrinsic value. It is, however, dependent on time, culture, society and history. So as to implement the constitutional provision of 350(A), that focus usage of mother tongue for linguistic minorities at primary level, there will be a need for huge number of teachers who are acquainted with that tribal language. The political ignorance towards the SC/ST education also has retarded the growth. This issue had to be noticed and worked upon with selfless efforts. The inequality, discrimination on caste, class and gender, injustice and disparity can only be reduced by the upliftment of the education levels. The identity and the self-esteem of the weaker section has to be strengthened by giving due respect to their knowledge and not suppressing their culture. The school environment should be made children friendly and the teachers should promote their local knowledge without getting influenced by the…

Urdu: Urdu is the national language, and one of two official languages of Pakistan (the other being English). Although only about 8% of Pakistanis speak it as their first language, it is spoken as a second and often third language by nearly all Pakistanis. Its introduction as the lingua franca was encouraged by the British upon the capitulation and annexation of Sindh and Punjab with the subsequent ban on the use of Persian. The decision to make the language change was to institute a universal language throughout then British Raj in South Asia as well as minimize the influence of Persia, Ottoman Empire, Afghanistan and Central Asia had on this transitional region. Urdu is a relatively new language in the contemporary sense but has undergone considerable modifications and development borrowing heavily on the traditions of older languages like Persian, Arabic, Turkish and local South Asian languages all of which can be found in its vocabulary. It began as a standardized register of Hindi and in its spoken form. It is widely used for personal letters as well as public literature, in the literary sphere and in the popular media. It is a required subject of study in all primary and secondary schools. As Pakistan’s national language, Urdu has been promoted to promote national unity. It is written with a modified form of the…
