Music Midterm
Tuesday and Thursday 12:15-1:30
1. I am 19 years old and have never truly been able to understand music. I have never been taught the correct way to listen to music and feel the music. I have never taken any prior music classes or ever been able to play an instrument. Although, I have always loved music. Being in enjoyment of music has really assisted me in finding a new appreciation in not only music, but also famous composers that I have never heard of. I’ve never listened to symphony type music or instrumentals. This class has helped me to realize how relaxing and soothing a song with out any words can be. In addition, I have learned about melody and harmony. Also I now understand that melody is the reason why songs stick in your head and are easy to remember.
2. My favorite composer I have learned about this year in class is Aaron Copland. Copland was born in 1900 in Brooklyn and had four other siblings. He was an American composer and some refer to him as the dean of American Composer. Throughout Copland’s life he was a composer, composition teacher, writer, and also a conductor. My favorite piece of work by Copland is Appalachian Spring. This work premiered in 1944. At first the work was titled Ballet for Martha, due to lack of a better name. After listening to the work and enjoying it, I decided to research into Appalachian Spring and learn more about it. I learned that the work is based on a spring celebration in Pennsylvania in the 19th century with the American Pioneers. This made me more interested because I have lived in Pennsylvania my entire life. Copland’s work was soothing to me and led me to be interested in his other work.
3. The statement “Music is not only for entertainment” can be interpreted numerous ways. Music is utilized by people in many different ways. Music can be used to sooth you, or to pump you up or get you excited for that big game. To me, the statement means that music is not only for
