Introduction
1. I visited the Pre-School program, This Program is part of the public school system and is offered either half day 8:30 to 11:00 or full day 8:30 to 2:30. There are currently two classroom dedicated for the . The has its own wing to help keep the little ones apart from the older children, although the school is only Pk-2 grade. There is an M-F full day class with 8 children that attend every day. There is an AM and PM M-W-F and T- TH ½ days with around 10 to 12 children, making a total class size of about 20 children per day. The children are aged between 3 and 5 years. The is staffed in accordance to EEC regulations.

The teachers use a Theme Based method “tools of the mind” adapted from Lev Vygotsky. Its theme based, that everything in the room has to do with only that theme. The theme while I was there was “VET”, everything that doesn’t have to do with pets, animals or the vet is turned around or covered up. This includes all books, coloring pages, toys, and arts & crafts. I believe it made the room look messier than it really was. They had to turn their sand table into the dog groomers table and the puppet theater into the vet clinic. Although I really liked the idea behind the theme I didn’t like that the class room seemed to be turned almost upside down to have to do it. Teachers are given two rooms, they use one room mainly for snack and circle time (we will call this room 2) the other room for play (we will call this room 1) most of their manipulatives and larger cardboard blocks were in room 2. I would defiantly have both of these in my main play area. I don’t know if room 2 seemed more playful because they hadn’t hidden everything as they did in room 1, this every well could be the case.

    There are many different types of setting which provide care and education for children and families. The main three settings are the statutory sector, voluntary sector and private sector. Statutory sector is a service that by law has to be provided by the government to children and families, for example, St Peters RC Primary School. The opening and closing times is between 8:45-3:10 (depending on before/after school clubs). This school is provided by the state and offer education for children 4-11 years. They have qualified staff and aim to support children though after school activities, extra help in classes if a child needs more support. They work with adults through parents evenings so the parents can meet their child’s teacher, also the parents will have a better understanding where the child is up to e.g. milestones. Workshops so parents can learn what the children are learning in school, this supports both the child and parents as it means the parent can help the child at home.     Observing this toddler has taught me many things. I was able to learn about the different forms of child development and what it looks like. One of the major forms of child development is physical. The child experiences major child development during the first two years of life. During this time the child experiences gross-motor development. The skills obtained from these developments are the ability to run, jump, catch etc. During the observation of the infant I was able to witness some of these developments. For example over the course of my observation I noticed the infant had significantly improved his ability to stand up and sit down on his own. He was struggling when the observation but seemingly got more comfortable doing it over and over again. The walking stared to become natural and more second nature however it was awkward and difficult when the infant just started. The infant also became more comfortable gripping and grasping objects. Another form of development observed was cognitive development. This development includes the ability to think rhetorically and the ability to communicate with others. The child made significant development in this field he was able to learn more words and express his thoughts in an understanding manner. The infant’s ability to play and interact with other children has increased. His memory has increased and is able to remember certain things over time his able to memorize more things and can recognize familiar faces. The final form of physical development is social-emotional development. This stage involves dealing with other children and being able to pay attention to adult figures. The infant is able to obey the adults and other persons in charge. They also become more comfortable at expressing their emotions. The child is also able to learn empathy and…

    I was placed in the infant room with babies 6-weeks to one year. The room was set up well. There were eight cribs and/or pack-and-plays aligned around the walls of the room with allowed for easy movement of teachers and crawlers. In the center of the room was a bright, primary color plat mat that the little ones loved rolling around on. There were also bouncers and jumper play toys for the kids to hop inside and have fun with. In one corner of the room was the changing table, kitchenette for warming milk and mixing baby cereal, and refrigerator for storage. There was ample storage space in the kitchenette and the entrances were blocked with childproof gates. Each child has a cubby to put their diaper bags in as well as extra toys, blankets, etc. I think that the room was just the right size for the amount of children in the class, and I think that it was set up in a user-friendly way so getting around was simple.…

    To support sensory integration therapy I would create an environment where movement was plentiful such as allowing the student to walk to get a drink of water from the fountain, offering different classroom jobs that involve dealing with heavy weight objects such as pushing in chairs. I would also incorporate brain breaks where I get the students up and moving because children with sensory processing disorder find it hard to stay still for long periods of time. Transition time would also encompass movement with calming music to help ease children into the next subject. In addition, I would give the students the option to sit on the floor with a towel. Some students like the idea of being able to play with the towel, feel the texture, and sit in any position they choose. I would also provide fidget toys, such as, giving students felt Velcro strips, taping it to the inside of their desk so students could touch and play with it throughout the lesson without being distracting to other students. Other toys could be, stress balls, water bottles, and play dough. I would also be aware of how stimulating my room was.
