RELIGION ESSAY All religions have their own unique features, whether it is their god(s), or how they worship. In my opinion, Buddhism is the religion with the interesting characteristics. Buddhism is based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, he received the name Buddha when he became enlightened and discovered the truth about life and suffering. It is a religion about why we suffer and how we can get rid of it. A spiritual goal for Buddhists is to reach nirvana, the most enlightened and blissful state that one can achieve because there is no suffering in nirvana. One interesting feature of Buddhism is that there is no god. Buddha himself said he is not a god, nor was he sent by god. Unlike most religions, there is no divine power being worshipped, he was just a teacher that wanted to share with others how they can get rid of their own suffering and reach nirvana. Buddha had no relation with god whatsoever, the relationship between him, his disciples, and his followers are that of a teacher and student. Buddha was just a normal person who went around teaching others how they could reach enlightenment like he has. Another interesting feature of Buddhism is that it is strictly not a religion; it is more a way of life. When Buddhists worship Buddha they don’t worship him as a god, or supernatural being, they are just showing appreciation for his teachings. There are no rules that you have to follow to get into “heaven”, just steps to show you how to reach nirvana (get rid of your suffering). The 5 Morals are things to live by to help you reach nirvana; do not kill, do not steal, abstain from sexual misconduct and sensual overindulgence, do not lie, and do not consume drugs or alcohol. In Buddhism, the concept of “hell” is also very different from most religions. It is not a place for eternal damnation as viewed by “god” or “the almighty creator”. In Buddhism, there are an unlimited number of hells, like there are an unlimited number of
