Epigentics Research Paper
Epigentics is a natural process that occurs within the body that activates and deactivates certain parts of a person's genome expressing different genes. This process occurs during early human development for purposes of cell differentiation while still in the embryonic state, but scientists have also found that this cycle continues throughout a person's life. Epigenetics helps to explain the balance between nature and nurture in phenotypic expression. Methyl groups are attached to certain base pairs along a genetic sequence inhibiting transcription of a particular gene thus turning the gene "off" and leaving it unexpressed. Environmental factors can cause methylation and de-methylation of the histone proteins that DNA is coiled around causing

    Genetics are a study of genes and the variation that occurs in living organisms; genetics are apart of the nature cycle. Genetic factors are the characteristics that you inherit from your parents. There are different types of genetic factors the first are inherited variation, which is caused by variation due to genetic causes. Some examples of inherited variation would be eye colour, hair colour and skin colour. Furthermore, other genetic factors would be illnesses for example cystic fibrosis which is caused by damaged genes, coeliac disease is a disease in the small intestine which does not allow you to digest gluten, brittle bone disease is a disease where you have an increased likelihood of fracturing bones, rheumatic disease is a very painful disease that is caused by inflammation in the joints or muscles, asthma is a respiratory condition that causes attacks in the bronchi of the lungs which makes it difficult to breathe. Cystic fibrosis would affect development because it leads to a build-up of thick and sticky mucus in the tubes and passageways of the lungs and digestive system. This leads to the lungs and digestive system become damaged, infected and inflamed. This would affect a person’s physical ability because they may find it difficult to breathe which may affect their ability of playing athletic sports (e.g. football). This will lead to the person socially not meeting different people, and then this may lead to them emotionally feeling quite depressed as they may not socialise as much as other people.     To understand implications that come with epigenetics, one must first understand epigenetics. So, what exactly is it? Simply put, epigenetics is the study of changes in gene expression not caused by alterations to the DNA sequence (Berger, Kouzarides, Shiekhattar, & Shilartifard, 2009).
