Some challenges Martin has faced since he's been diagnosed with epilepsy is how life changing it is. She interviewed Bernie who is 75-years-old and a retired Kern County Sheriff. Bernie was in the Navy and now spends his time as a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity when time allows. He has a hard of hearing and has cancer disabilities and has been married for 56 years. Bernie wishes that other people would know about his disability is to not get old, it’s not fun at all. It creates a lot of hardship on others since you are always having to ask people for help. Some challenges he’s faced are not being able to do what he wants such as yard word and volunteering. He does not like that he has to constantly visit the doctor for his chemo appointments, especially when he has to ask people for rides. He says it takes his freedom away, and is embarrassed at times to ask for help from others. A change he would like to see is that people should be more understanding of people with disabilities, and just because they are slower doesn’t mean that they are doing that on purpose. To have easier ways to get around, such as better public transportation. Bernie says that diversity is important and everyone needs to learn about it. You can learn a lot by talking to old people since they have gone through a lot of things in their lifetime. Bernie’s advice for us is to be more tolerant of people with disabilities.
