Equality in America is rapidly improving and we see signs of the change everyday. Even though some groups such as women in the workforce and same-sex couples still face discrimination at times, however there are clear trends that show the situation is improving for many of these groups. It is becoming more and more common for people to see women in high places in the workforce and gay couples trying to get married. Indications of these positive changes come up constantly in media and popular culture. Gay individuals are not only in tv shows but sometimes they play some of the lead roles such as in the show Modern Family. People have been accustomed to seeing gay people everywhere and nowadays people treat them the same as any other couple. being openly gay is much easier today than it was years ago because now people are more accepting. Looking back on it, it is not even clear why gay marriage was ever illegal in the first place. You also see petitions for legalizing same- sex marriage everyday. The same goes for women. With Hilary Clinton’s popularity, having a woman president would not be a surprise and could be the next step for many people. There are also many women at high levels in the workforce such as Marissa Mayer Cheryl Sandberg. These women are both CEO’s and COO’s which are very high positions to be in. Even though gender discrimination was very high at one point, that is no longer the case and you can see it everyday with men and women being able to do the same jobs and be at the same levels. In America, we see equality improving and being more significant everyday in news and popular culture.
As girl growing up in America, I have taken equality for granted. I have never felt unequal in any way with my peers and thought everyone had the same experience as I did. As I grew up, I learned more about the topic and realized it used to be a very big deal. Even though America is a very accepting and equal place, there are still things that could be done to enhance that even more. As I stated before about gay couples being accepted in society today, this is very much true but still not every state in America has legalized gay marriage yet. Even though a certificate on paper is not going to change some of the more conservative peoples minds on gay marriage as fast as other people, it is a very good place to start. I belive that everyone should be equal no matter what they look like or who they are or even their interests. If people are being discriminated against for shallow things like that, nobody will be able to see deeper or get to know a person better. Growing up with no discrimination, I have taken equality for granted, but now I know that it has been a big issue for many people and we are taking steps everyday to make sure everyone is equal.
In America, we see equality heading in a positive direction and improving everyday. Many topics today like gay marriage and women in high levels of the workforce are very accepted through most people. It is not as big of an issue as it would be years back when these things were new to society. It makes many people including me be proud to live in a country so accepting because there are probably many other countries who are much more discriminatory than the US. In general America has come a long way since the start. even though there is still room for change, America is in a good place and continues to evolve everyday.
