Equality In Sports

Imagine this,you're a girl walking up to a whole bunch of guys playing basketball, and you ask “hey can I play basketball with you?”. What do you think their reply would be “yes come join us” or “no go play with your little dolls”. Hello, I'm Mathusiga Sivakumar and I'm here to talk to you about feminism in sports. Gender equality is currently a popularly discussed topic. Sports is just one area where women do not receive the same amount of respect or support they need as men. This is due to the term that men are just so much stronger than a woman in sports. I think women's inequality in sports has a negative impact on women, that try to succeed in the category of sports for three reasons. Firstly they don't get equal rights financially secondly performance ability and finally in public support.

Have you ever heard of brands like Nike, Adidas, Under Armour well those brands only got popular because of big celebrities like LeBron James, Stephen curry, and Kanye west. See how all these brand got popular by famous male athletes and celebrities. The highest paid athlete in the NBA that gets paid for his sneaker is Kobe Bryant. He gets paid 34 million dollars for signing with Nike. The average WNBA player does not even get a shoe brand they either have to wear free Adidas shoes or an NBA player's shoe but covering their logo
according to sneaker news and the sneaker industry. This brings me to my first point finance. Woman do not get supported financially. This means they get paid lower than men's sports. Players get paid more because of sponsors and commercials and things like that. The female athlete is barely in any sport related commercial and the don't get any sponsors, therefore, they obviously got to get paid less than men. Another thing that gives an athlete more payment is the media and women barely ever get any coverage by the media. I'm pretty sure that you don't watch women's soccer or basketball. It's something that is viewed by the wider public.

I am a basketball player myself and over the years I have learned to stay strong when a guy says no to me playing basketball with them. but I don't give up. And that bring me to my 2 reason performance ability. Some of the reasons why there are fewer opportunities in sports are because girls don't take sports literally and even if there is a spot on a good team it won't be that helpful to get a job out of it as a girl. Because of stereotypical things created men are stronger than a woman so no one would care for women's sports. For example, let's use cats and dogs. Let's say that the dog are a guy and the cats are girls. You're going to a pet shop to pick the best pet. You see that the dog are doing so well and many tricks but the cats are slacking cause some cats are not participating and or cats is standing out so well. But between a whole bunch of dogs that are doing well would you really pick one cat when the rest are not trying. “No” and that what's happening in our world today because there are girls that can play sports but because of other girls thinking that sports aren't really a girl thing they back of heading into style and makeup and things like that. In performance girl is a week because rarely any girls try.

My final reason is public support.
I think that another reason that girl are not getting as much support as men is because of public support. Women's support is only viewed by the wider public so there aren't any supporters. Also, no one ever cares about the rights of women's sports because it isn't a popular topic but I think that everyone should care for this.
