Imagine this,you're a girl walking up to a whole bunch of guys playing basketball, and you ask “hey can I play basketball with you?”. What do you think their reply would be “yes come join us” or “no go play with your little dolls”. Hello, I'm Mathusiga Sivakumar and I'm here to talk to you about feminism in sports. Gender equality is currently a popularly discussed topic. Sports is just one area where women do not receive the same amount of respect or support they need as men. This is due to the term that men are just so much stronger than a woman in sports. I think women's inequality in sports has a negative impact on women, that try to succeed in the category of sports for three reasons. Firstly they don't get equal rights financially secondly performance ability and finally in public support.

Have you ever heard of brands like Nike, Adidas, Under Armour well those brands only got popular because of big celebrities like LeBron James, Stephen curry, and Kanye west. See how all these brand got popular by famous male athletes and celebrities. The highest paid athlete in the NBA that gets paid for his sneaker is Kobe Bryant. He gets paid 34 million dollars for signing with Nike. The average WNBA player does not even get a shoe brand they either have to wear free Adidas shoes or an NBA player's shoe but covering their logo …show more content…
I think that another reason that girl are not getting as much support as men is because of public support. Women's support is only viewed by the wider public so there aren't any supporters. Also, no one ever cares about the rights of women's sports because it isn't a popular topic but I think that everyone should care for this.

    One of the key points to evaluate here is the argument that males biologically have an advantage in the majority of sports. In the vast number of cases this is true, however this should not be a reason why females are either discriminated against or feel pressurised to not participate in a sport. In a study done by McArdle, Katch & Katch in 1981, it was shown that among Western adults, men are around 50 percent stronger than women1. One thing that is important to point out here is that the average female has not been encouraged to participate in activities that would develop the growth and potential of muscles in the same way men have been encouraged to do. The stereotype that women should be slender and with little muscle does not aid this particular viewpoint on women’s sport. This leads on to the point of the history of female sport and the view on women’s roles in society. The earlier you go back in history, the more the viewpoint has existed that women are there to aid the husband in the house and bring up the children whilst he is out earning the money. This was very much the case and still is in some cultures, which inhibited and inhibits women from participating in sport because they simply do not have the time for it. As Spears (1978) said in his study, “Only the exceptional woman was involved in sport”2.     The benefits of sports can impact a person with being able to build self-esteem and help, especially if started at a young age, learn self-discipline, goal setting, problem solving, and many other great skills to help in progressing in life.
