Equality Isn T Achievable In America

Although American laws state that all American citizens are treated equally, American citizens are treated unfairly based on gender, religion, and race. There is two perspectives regarding equality, the idea that equality is achievable and the idea that equality isn’t achievable in America. Ginger Adam Otis’s article “The Struggle Continues for Racial Equality in America” and John Legend’s Academy Award speech prove that equality is achievable in America John Legend’s academy award speech provides information that proves that American citizens aren’t treated equally. According to Legend’s speech, “We live in the most incarcerated country in the world. There are more black men under correctional control today than were under slavery in 1850.” This quote shows that blacks are not treated equally in today’s society. This quote supports my proposition because it shows how blacks are being mistreated. Even though laws say otherwise, American citizens are still treated differently based on race.
For example, the article “The Struggle Continues for Racial Equality in America” states,” Today nearly 60 years after the landmark Brown ruling, the number has barely changed; 74.1% of black students attend largely segregated schools, according to EPI’s analysis.” This quote shows that blacks are being segregated in a way that affects their entire life. This quote supports my proposition because it shows that America is far from equality.
