“Being an equine vet can be an emotionally satisfying job for many. The daily rewards in terms of support for your endeavors and the satisfaction of helping animals can be very powerful ongoing motivators. The financial benefits, which is just the icing on the proverbial cake, is that I am able to create my own schedule and work as many hours one week as I would like, while being able to take time off to attend family functions, and other equestrian events and clinics without having to deal with a boss or requesting time off months before and possibly not even getting the days off that I would need. When I was at my job shadow with a licenced well-known equine massage therapist, she had taught me a lot and gave me lots of information. Not just about massage but more about horses in general and showed me how truly sensitive and their ways of communicating with humans on how they are feeling and which spots they are sore. The only risk factors that she had told me was there's no benefits such as health care, dental, medical and things like that, but with your own hours and fitting in clients during your work schedule you can also have another job that maybe did offer good benefits. When I was on my job shadow she was working on a horse named Jo that was hurting really bad in the back hip and he tried to kick at her multiple times because he was so sore. The other horses she worked on in front of me were more calm but you could tell that they were hurting by the little things they did with their face or how they were standing. You know that they feel better when they are super relaxed at the end and they fall asleep, or they yawn or bat their eyes. It is very important you have good knowledge of the anatomy of a horse and their skeletal system. “Many of the graduates work with horses that are on the circuit, have been selected to work with the US equestrian team for the olympics, and have also worked with horses who have won the Triple Crown Race. You need to also make sure you apply the correct treatment. “Overall, the goal of equine massage is to promote circulation, relieve tension, improve muscle tone, and relax muscle spasms.”
