The fall of Rome
All civilizations eventually come crashing to an end. “Rome lasted for 503 years and this empire was located in Italy. Rome was about 6,500,000 square miles.” (Frequently asked questions, the Roman Empire). What was the main reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire? When we ask this question the word fall refers to extinction or demise. The three main reasons of the fall of the Roman Empire was because of military weakness, political corruption and economic decline. Rome was affected negatively by the poor military strategy’s during its time in need. “Roman soldiers at the time did not wear breastplates and head armor, these soldiers often got shot down by archers” (doc B). I think the soldiers were lazy. They did not want to carry around all this heavy armor in the heat. Archers would always shoot down and defeat the Roman army. “The Huns exceeded any definition of savagery. They have compact sturdy limbs and think necks […]” (doc D). The Huns where the Romans enemy. They were savages and lived anywhere eating anything. The Romans stood no chance against this military brilliance. The Huns were ready to endure anything at the time, and the Roman soldiers were too lazy to wear armor. The Roman Empire took a big hit from their corrupted political empire. “Over a 50 year period Rome had 19 rulers, and 13 got assassinated. None of Rome’s rulers dies naturally or ‘old age’” (doc A). What I can infer about this is the Roman citizens were angry with their rulers and their government was not trusted very much. This would corrupt Rome because of so much change of power. “Rome was invaded a lot by its enemies. When Rome did invade they would end up running back home” (doc C). This means to me that Rome was hated politically because so many different civilizations invaded them. Being hated politically would lead to a demise of a civilization. Finally Rome also had a bad economic decline. “The condition of Roman subjects in time of peace is worse than war… the taxes are severe […]” (doc E). This means that even during time of peace Rome was in trouble with money. Rome needed do raise its economy by putting loads of taxes on the citizens. These people could not afford these raised taxes and forces poverty throughout Rome. “The Roman world was shaken by a violent earthquake. [..] 50,000 people lost their lives in the flood alone and harvest lands were ruined” (doc F). This earthquake helped only to destroy Rome and their economy. With 50,000 people dead and their farmland destroyed Rome lost a lot of workers and valuable land to produce crops. This is one less item to sell in this was bringing down Rome. In a nutshell, the Roman people once had a thriving and powerful civilization. The Roman Empire is perhaps the most studied and revered of any government that has ever existed. There are many theories that attempt to explain the decline and fall of the great empire. Through each of these various explanations there are proving documents that Rome fell because of their Military weaknesses, Political corruption and Economic decline. The Romans were forces out of their natural habitat and there way of life and civilization was lost forever.

Without a strong army a nation that is surrounded by nomadic tribes that are ambitious to conquer them are doomed. The Roman army wasn’t at all strong because according to Montanelli (D5) their army was composed by foreigners, these German mercenaries were unskilled and felt little or no loyalty towards the Emperor. Also, according to Strayer, Gatzke, and Harbison (D1) an overwhelming majority of the Roman population believed the old civilization wasn’t worth saving. Therefore, they didn’t have the desire to protect the nation and serve in the army. A country’s military directly influences the welfare of its nation; this is why the Roman Army’s incompetence led them to their…

Foreign invasions had a humongous role in the downfall of Rome. It says that the Huns did not look like a human. Marcellinus said that the Huns had thick necks and compact and sturdy limbs. The Huns also slaughtered everyone and pillaged everything in their way (Document D). The invaders had been able to break into Rome because the emperors allowed the military to stop drills and not wear armor. The invasions had been all the emperors and militaries fault. It was also the Emperors fault because the were the ones who had agreed when the army asked to stop drills and not wear armor. (Document B). Priscus, the roman ambassador to the Huns, found that the former Roman citizens liked their new life. They thought it was more just than Rome and they…

The major reasons for the fall of Rome are truly those that have to do with Rome's political and economic state. One of the Rome’s problems prior to its fall was the lack of respect for authority, among the citizens and military forces. All the attacks from the barbarians caused problems in the military. This basically led to a lot of political turmoil because of all the chaos that was born, and it started to make the military crumble as well. Rome's economy started to go downhill too, after a long period…

The first cause of the fall of the roman empire was their military weakness. The soldiers in the Roman Empire became very lazy and neglected their armor. According to Document B, “The customary armor began to seem heavy since the soldiers rarely ever wore it. Therefore, they first asked the emperor to set aside the breastplates...And then the helmets. So our soldiers fought the Goths without any protection for chest and head and were often beaten by archers.” This shows that because of their…

There were many reasons for the decline and fall of the Roman Empire. Each document in this essay explains a different reason. Some causes were: political, economic, social, and military differences and problems. Basically, the problem was that the gap between the rich aristocrats and the poor serfs got bigger and bigger; the rich got richer as the poor got poorer. Also, when something grows, it always falls back down. In Document 1, an excerpt from a book was taken out. According to the authors, the basic problems facing the Western Roman Empire came from the people that gave up devotion to the old civilization and didn't believe that it was worth saving. Why should they care about their land if they weren't allowed to take part in government say, they couldn't form groups to protect themselves, and were even excluded from their own army? The practically jobless people realized that their cities were slowly falling, but no one bothered to stop their decline; it was something that had to happen. The loss of popular support to the oppressive government, increased government corruption, division of the empire, and internal power struggles were some political causes that led to the fall of Rome. In Document 2, two causes for the fall of Rome were: the large size, and the introduction to Christianity. Because the Empire grew too large, it became uneasy to control. It was inevitable for the fall to occur, no matter how much anyone tried. Jesus' introduction to Christianity also started a change. The clergy (priests) helped change the moral values of society. It no longer mattered much, and military power was buried or thrown away. The rich's wealth was taken away and given to charity (poor). In Document 3, the Muller's explanation for the decline was an economic issue. As the Empire grew stronger, so did economy. When the Empire started to decline, business ceased and there was little progress, so that also crashed along with the empire itself. Slavery caused another…

Doc 2. States “Rome’s fall was an inevitable effect of its grand size.” Due to Rome’s enormous extent of land from conquering, they couldn’t keep up the amount of gold and reliable soldiers to maintain roads and routine maintenance. The numerous Roman-ruled countries created the necessity for soldiers and protection to break up any civil wars and stop any foreign barbarians from invading and ruining Roman property. However, many Roman-hired foreign soldiers were disloyal and unfaithful to Rome and there weren’t enough Roman soldiers to protect the borders which allowed for invasions, riots, and revolts to occur. This was also stated in Doc. 2 as “borders became difficult to secure.” To keep the roads in shape for trade, Rome needed a lot of gold, which was never enough. This hurt the economy because lacking the ability to maintain roads meant that they also couldn’t maintain trade. If there wasn’t a large, increasing rate of civilizations and countries being conquered by Roman officials, then Rome would’ve been able to preserve their economy, and drastically decreased the amount of riots and invasions caused by anger and…

The Roman Empire fell because of many factors and falling politics. One of the reasons was Rome having emperors that were probably the son of the previous emperor, and they were very unfit for their position, because they knew nothing, or they were mentally unstable.
