This source is useful for my topic because it tells me facts about Hemingway’s life and how he lived it, his career, his books and why he wrote them, and it talks about what he likes to do on his free time, which was traveling to places and helping people.
The authors write about Ernest Hemingway’s early life. It talks about how Ernest’s first wife, Hadley, encouraged him to return to Europe and be a correspondent for the Toronto Star with the intension of being a writer. The authors talk about how he became aquatinted with Ezra Pound, Gertude Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, Archibald MacLeish, Ernest Walsh, and Ford Madox Ford, when he moved with Hadley to Paris. It tells how his first book published was called In Our Time, which was a collection of short stories and how Ernest wrote nonfiction books such as Death in the Afternoon and Green Hills of Africa. It talks about all the places he visited and how he ended up with each of his wives. The authors say that Hemingway was in the gossip columns of magazines more than the literary columns and how he had depression and hypertension, which made him kill himself in his house in Kethcum, Idaho in 1961. The source is useful to me because it gives me a better description on his early fame, his writing, and his reputation to the eyes of others. Also, the authors say that Ernest Hemingway had a collection of unfinished works and influenced many readers, nonreaders, and other writers than any other American writer.
In this article written by William D. Pederson, he summarizes Ernest Hemingway’s life more than his writing career. It talks about his early life, such as what he would do in the summer with his family, who his childhood hero was, who was Theodore Roosevelt, the education he received, the jobs he had, his love life/wives, and how he was depressed and blamed his mother for his father’s suicide. William D. talks about Ezra Pound who became Ernest’s mentor, Gertude Stein who became his mother figure, and how Max Perkins became his father figure. William says that Ernest Hemingway became one of the best novelists by the mid 1920’s and he talks about Hemingway’s books and where he wrote them. Also, this source talks about how Ernest served as a correspondent in London and flew missions during WWII and that he joined combat. William also talks about Ernest’s poor health and how he had two failed suicide attempts until July 2, 1961, where he shot himself at home. This source was helpful because it gave me a better overview on why he had depression and suicide attempts. Also, it made me have a better understanding of his experience in the war and the people he looked up to in his life.
