Understand employment responsibilities and rights in health, social care or children's and young people's settings. Task A

Ai Imagine you are a newly appointed supervisor/manger within your service. You need to update you staff handbook to reflect current employment law.

Identify three different sources of information you could use to enable you to do this.

Health and safety executive (HSE)- latest health and safety requirements.
Direct Gov- changes in the law since the last update.
For reference- the existing handbook.

Once you have identified a reliable source of information:

Aii a) list three aspects of employment covered by law.

Work conditions- discrimination, health and safety
Wages- employment rights
Hours- not being over worked

b) list three main features of current employment legislation.

Health and Safety at work act 1974 places a general duty on employers so far as is reasonably practicable to protect the health, safety and welfare at work of all employees.
Employers are required to provide safe plant and systems of work; safe methods of use, handling storage and transport of articls and substances;
Necessary information, instruction, training and supervision; a safe and well-maintained workplace, including safe access and egress; a safe working environment with adequate welfare facilities.

The Employment rights act 1996 the right to receive a written statement of terms and conditions of employment a right not to be unfairly dismissed maternity rights redundancy provisions, including right to redundancy pay statuary minimum notice period of dismissals and reason for dismissals protection of wages protection from suffering a detriment in employment, and time off for public duties.

The Equality act 2010 the characteristics: age disability gender management pregnancy and maternity race religion or belief sex sexual orientation.

Aii Briefly outline why employment laws exists.
