Choose a celebrity with a certain notoriety surrounding him or her. Here you will need to consult not only academic articles but also popular sources, such as opinion pieces or album/movie reviews. Explain why the celebrity is controversial or popular. What do the differing opinions tell you about the star? For instance, some people say Miley Cyrus is an attention-seeking brat while others applaud her for being in charge of her style, sexuality, and image at a young age. Some suggestions of notorious individuals follow, though you may certainly explore your own: Eminem, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston. No matter what your opinion on a particular issue or person, I should not get a sense of your bias. Present your evidence in a professional manner.
--Your essay should be well-organized, employing effective topic sentences and transitional phrases as you compare and contrast the various literatures you will be analyzing.
--You must cite any paraphrases, summaries, or direct quotes within your paper. Do not rely wholly on merely summarizing, as I want to see your own analysis of them throughout. You are going one step beyond summarizing by connecting your texts and analyzing the rhetorical strategies your texts employ.
--You do not have to have an argumentative thesis for this essay, but your paper should have a clear focus and identity that presents a solid, cohesive view of the issue at hand.
