Essay About Religion In America
Islam is the second most popular religion in the world. Islam was created to bring peace and unity throughout the world. In the United States, citizens often view fellow Muslims as a threat, due to encounters, such as nine eleven. We have been stereotyped as violent individuals who forcefully try to instill our religion unto others, when that is certainly untrue. When I lived in Texas, I did not have any means of transportation so I had to catch the bus. I had rode the bus to UPS to pick up my PlayStation 4 my mom had sent me. When I walked back towards the bus stop, this man had left and sat on the other side of the street. Then, when I got on the bus, I could not believe my eyes. All of the passengers who were on the bus got off once they saw me board the bus with the brown box. The bus driver had saw the disbelief and my eyes and he sympathetically told me I could sit the box near him. He apologized and told his assistant to help me with the box and wait with me until my next bus came. I was grateful but upset because this is what America was truly like towards Muslim individuals. …show more content…
I saw a variety of Muslims. I met people from the Nation of Islam, Nation of God and Earths, and Arabic Muslims. They were very wise and gave me insights on their knowledge. It was all confusing because Nation of Islam and Nation of Gods and Earth both were a majority of Blacks and they all had very racial points of view. Meanwhile, the People of The Quran, original Muslims, had very racial point of views about their fellow Muslim brothers and sisters. They also both told me I would encounter a lot of racism being Black and Muslim, especially in Chicago. I thought they were overreacting, but surely enough I

This abstract reading written by Robert N. Bellah, introduces the idea of a “Civil Religion” and argues that, apart from the normal religious traditions our nation follows, there is an unrecognized “Civil Religion” that becomes evident during national crisis or during high public ceremony. According to Bellah, “there actually exists alongside of and rather clearly differentiated from the churches an elaborate and well-institutionalized civil religion in America.” Bellah points out many different examples to prove his point of how “Civil Religion” has been expressed throughout history. First Bellah points out that every president since Washington has mentioned God in his inaugural speech. Next he points out that the presidents did not refer to any religion in particular. They did not refer to Jesus Christ, or to Moses, or to the Christian church. Last a significant point that Bellah makes refers to the Civil war and “Civil Religion”.…

I have recently read the article Americans Get an ‘F’ in Religion by Cathy Lynn Grossman and the message that it is trying to give out to the reader is quite simple. The article is basically saying that people in America are quite ignorant of world religions. According to the text, not knowing about religions is treacherous. “Americans' deep ignorance of world religions — their own, their neighbors' or the combatants in Iraq, Darfur or Kashmir — is dangerous” said by Stephen Prothero, chairman of the religion department at Boston University. Cathy Lynn Grossman wrote this article in order to get Americans to realize this. The goal is to encourage the people of America to at least learn some basics of religions and what separates each from others. "Religions aren't all saying the same thing. That's presumptuous and wrong. They start with different problems, solve the problems in different ways, and they have different goals." said by Prothero. The article may have been written in the year 2006 or 2007, when President Bush was in office because it reference that activities in Iraq were still happening. This correlates on why…

To those outside of the Islamic faith many facts of Islam are a mystery. Within the last decade the religion of Islam has received bad publicity due to the actions of terrorists and Muslim extremists groups. Their actions have created a popular belief that Islam is a cult and Muslim people are hate filled militants that are mainly from one region. The history and practice of Islam is based from a set of beliefs that focus on good will and peace and belief in one God. Muslims all around the world follow these original beliefs however variations in Islam practice and beliefs can also be found depending on region. Islam,…

Theoretical approaches in general help us understand the concepts of religion that both our society has created and societies before ours. Two theoretical approaches to “religion” that would help understand ancient cultures would be Archaeology and History. Archaeologist would look closely at artifacts and past civilizations to understand the way they practice or believed in religion. Where as Historians would examine the language that was spoke, which would then correlate to the stories being told and the texts that came from a specific culture, traditions and decrees. Many may say that the archaeological approach to understanding religion has more evidence since the way these individuals look at religion have tangible objects opposed to the…

“[Individual] is not made for society, but society is made for the [individual]. No institution can be good which does not tend to improve the individual” (Fuller). The purpose of this quote is to show what society is about. Society has been part of our lives ever since we were born. They helped raise us to become who we are today. They taught us all the things that we learned to help us get by on the adventurous passage called life. They either gave us blessings or taught us lessons to prevent making mistakes; they also taught us to learn from those mistakes to become wiser. There are many social factors that can help the individual become a better person than they were in the past to benefit them now and in the future. One of those factors is religion.…

Growing up in a diverse city, the culture around me has always been different. Every person that I see always has a different type of belief than me. I’m a 17 year old Muslim student who lives in Southeast Texas. My father is from the Middle East, and my mother is from Western Europe. My parents migrated as refugees from Croatia to Houston in 1995 due to the ongoing war in Yugoslavia. After they’ve migrated they’ve lived in peace here ever since. However that has changed a lot since 9/11, one of the biggest terrorist attacks in history to ever happen in the United States. Now everyone who originates from the Middle East has been looked at as an abomination, and how we're judged for everything that we believe in. It just happens to be that I was born in the time of all of this monstrosity.…

Because of this most of people perception comes from ignorance and the failure to understand what this religion is truly about. One of the reasons Islam is perceived as a threat is because of the history built between Islam and Christianity. For example, the crusades, which occurred in the medieval times, the Muslims and the Christians have been fighting for control of the holy land, Jerusalem. The main reason for this shared animosity is that throughout history, each religion and people have felt that their God is, in fact, the only God and that the other faith is filled with Heretics or Infidels. Lastly, Islam is perceived as a threat because what is going on now with the ISIS attacks and the problems in Syria. ISIS is a major terrorist group that splintered from al-Qaida. They are the ones responsible for the attacks on Syria, and many terror attacks…

America has always been a religious nation. The “threads of America's religious history are so intimately woven into the social and political fabric of the United States that they continue to shape public life today.” Religious liberty in particular is an important part of the American identity; many of the earliest Europeans to settle in America, including the Puritans of New England and Catholics of Maryland came to America because they sought relief from religious persecution in their European homes. Religious liberty might well be defined as a raison d’être for the United States; if it were not for the religious persecution that occurred in Europe against groups like the Puritans and Quakers, the United States would have developed into a dramatically different nation.…

Civil Religion is the deep values that the nation has all together. Although there are many other religious denominations, civil religion is a nonsectarian quasi-religious faith in the United States. The common principles within this come from historical passages where coexistence between everyone is key. The leading force behind civil religion is Robert Bellah, who believed this was a phenomenon among American sociology, because there wasn't a denomination you had to claim to have these views. Civil Religion is common among the general public in the United States, because it has more to do with social issues than following a belief system that categorizes people under denominations or who they believe the superior power above us really is.…

The most important amendment is the freedom of religion. The freedom of religion lets you be who you are. The government can’t punish Americans for any religion you practice. There are not really any limits to this freedom. The first reason the freedom of religion is the most important amendment is because it lets Americans be their true self. You are being your true self if you are practicing a religion that you truly believe in. Nobody should take advantage for who you are or what you practice. Take World War II for an example, innocent jews had horrible stuff done to them for just practicing a religion. Nobody should ever have to go through something like that for just being who they are. Without the freedom of religion in America, innocent…

America is built upon a few basic freedoms, one of these being the freedom of religion. However, some seem to have forgotten this as more and more we hear about crimes against religious institutions. For someone to attack a peaceful congregation out of spite or ignorance is appalling, and yet this is the reality growing around us. Even individuals seem to have taken carrying out what they see as “religious justice” into their own hands, often hiding behind their first amendment to freedom of speech. I experienced one such case one day outside a mall when a man began harassing a young woman for expressing her faith through wearing a hijab.…
