Keeping in mind the end goal to lead Fortunato to the vaults where the Amontillado as far as anyone knows lies, he states “I am on my way to Luchesi (Lukesi)”, his enemy, to request his recommendation on the wine. Montresor knows about how much joy Fortunato holds in wine sampling and controls his pride. Montresor wears a “mask of black silk” symbolizing his evil, and again shows the persona that he has made keeping in mind the end goal to disguise his actual, controlling character. Montresor picks the carnival season to show his revenge which is generally a happy time and represents freedom. As they move far from the carnival and enter the dark vaults; Fortunato had fallen into Montresor's trap and demonstrates no escape for him. This represents how gullible one can be when they let their emotions get the best of them while failing to see the truth of one’s intentions. On a few events Montresor offers Fortunato an opportunity to leave. In these minutes, we comprehend that Montresor is controlling Fortunato's pride and building a tight trap, though Fortunato again sees just as companionship.
