The Yellow Wallpaper & The Story of An Hour
For the purpose of this paper I was asked to compare two short stories that have similar meanings. The two stories I chose were “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1892), and “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin (1894). I chose to pick these two stories because both the authors use a variety of literary techniques, including situational irony and symbolism to portray what it was like for women in their era. They both deal with severe contrast between societal roles that men and women occupy in the 19th century. The two stories are very similar in the sense that they are trying to represent how women were repressed

The word hysteria was used in the 19th century to acknowledge woman’s problems without examining the underlying issues. Men were seen as a so-called rational being who knew what was best. One can see this in both the stories. In the “Yellow Wallpaper” one can see that the narrator is going through postpartum depression. The narrator of “Yellow Wallpaper” was married to a doctor named John who basically shuts her out from the outside world keeping her in a bedroom and refraining her from any physical activity; she is even worried about writing in her journal because she does not want John to find out how she feels. She states, “If a physician of high standing, and one s own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression—a slight hysterical tendency—what is one to do?”(226). One can see that she has no control and is forced to believe his accusations even if she knows they are not true. Furthermore, her husband cannot understand the reasons for her condition due to the fact that he is not a woman and does not understand what its like to have a baby. Only a woman can understand what its like to go through postpartum depression. John just looks at her depression as something insignificant and silly. He prescribes medications that he thinks she needs for something she does not have. This just goes to show how women were not looked at as rational

During the time of the 1800’s women did not have many rights. Their main obligation in life was to marry young and take care of the house and the children, while the husband did all the physical things such as work and bring in an income. Women had very few rights during this time. It was almost like they were ruled by a man, that man being their husband. Although, in love with this man or just living the life of that era, they could not speak for themselves and were expected to live by the rules of the men they married. Women lived a very unequal unsatisfying lifestyle. In the stories “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “The Story of an Hour” both women are living very similar lives during the same era; lives of which were all but their own. Both of the women in these stories are characteristically the same, they both have wishes they were living lives of their own, both suffer from an illness developed by their husbands, and both women use parts of a room to symbolize their feelings.…

During this time period the woman were expected to keep the house clean, care for their children, and listen to their husbands. The men were expected to work a job and be the head of a household. The story narrates a woman’s severe depression which she thinks is linked to the yellow wallpaper. Charlotte Gilman experienced depression in her life and it inspired her to write “The Yellow Wallpaper.” The short story is based on a woman, not given a name in the text, who is very dependent on her husband. The narrator plays a gender role that is degraded by her successful husband, who is a doctor, because she is a female. John ignores his wife’s accusations with the wallpaper and looks down on the fact that she cannot fulfill her duty as a woman, mother, or wife by treating and calling her childish names.…

In this time period when a woman married, legally her husband owned everything she had. The protagonist represents the oppression and frustration that women went through in society. Women have been mistreated, enchained and dominated by men for most part of the human history. Until the second half of the twentieth century, there was great inequality between the social and economic conditions of men and women (Pearson Education). The battle for women's emancipation, however, had started in 1848 by the first women's rights convention, which was led by some remarkable and brave women (Pearson Education). One of the most notable feminists of that period was the writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman. She was also one of the most influential feminists who felt strongly about and spoke frequently on the nineteenth-century lives for women. Her short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper" characterizes the condition of women of the nineteenth century through the main character's life and actions in the text. It is considered to be one of the most influential pieces because of its realism and prime examples of treatment of women in that time. This essay analyzes issues the protagonist goes through while she is trying to break the element of barter from her marriage and love with her husband. This relationship status was very common between nineteenth-century women and their husbands.…

All good stories convey a message. Gilman’s main message seemed eager to bring to light gender role issues and stereotypes of her time period. An average relationship of her time generally included a working middleclass husband and a house keeping wife. The wife normally did as she was told by her husband and took care of any family needs. Being a famous writer, Gilman did not exactly have an average role in society in her time as a female. From an oppressed perspective, having experienced firsthand gender expectations that Gilman mocks stereotypical gender roles within the Yellow Wallpaper.…

The short stories “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin can be considered as a feminist and gender theory. It is noted that both stories were written by women and narrated from a woman’s point of view. In this regard, we find that the plots in both these stories are altogether different from each other, yet they both touch upon similar topics and can be said to be fundamentally the same as to themes and with respect to their purpose. Both stories discuss the tremendous differences that existed between the social parts that ladies and men had to play in the 19th century. This is because men were considered to be socially responsible and they were allowed to make independent choices in regards to their lives, while the women were portrayed as being second class citizens whose identity was only because of the men in their lives.…
