Communication is a vital skill in child development. Every individual in a child’s life contributes towards building this skill. It is critical to identify if a child needs support in speech, language and communication.
Children with speech problems may show some of the following signs
• They may not make clear sounds, struggle to say words with S, Z, B, G, K, D, R, etc. or pronounce incorrectly.
• Repeat first sound of the word like C-C-C-Come, W-W-W-Want, etc.
• Take long pauses while talking or stretches sounds like Ba-a-a-a-a-a-ll.
• Do not speak simple sentence smoothly.
• Have difficulty in playing and talking to peers.

For e.g. speech difficulty, expressive language difficulty, stammering, selective mutism, pragmatic difficulty, etc. Parents can seek advice and get referral for their child’s speech, language and communication development from Health officer, Speech & Language Therapy consultant, Early Years practitioner, SENCo and teacher if needed. SLT service have specialist skills and knowledge about the development of speech, language and communication and are specifically trained to:
• Assess speech, language and communication development
• Identify whether there are any difficulties
• Make a diagnosis and identify the nature of any difficulty
• Develop a treatment plan, resources and strategies to help the child and work with parent/carer, teachers to implement the same.
• Evaluate when treatment is complete and when a child should be discharged
